Chateau-sur-Mer is a landmark of High Victorian architecture, furniture, wallpapers, ceramics and stenciling. It was the most palatial residence in Newport from its completion in 1852 until the appearance of the Gilded Age Vanderbilt houses in the 1890s. Chateau-sur-Mer was built as an Italianate-style villa for China trade merchant William Shepard Wetmore. Mr. Wetmore died in 1862, leaving the bulk of his fortune to his son, George Peabody Wetmore, who married Edith Keteltas in 1869. During the 1870s, the young couple departed on an extended trip to Europe, leaving architect Richard Morris Hunt to remodel and redecorate the house in the Second Empire French style. As a result, Chateau-sur-Mer displays most of the major design trends of the last half of the 19th century. Several scenes for HBO's hit series "The Gilded Age" were filmed at Chateau-sur-Mer.

A departure from the rest of the cottages
This home is unique in that it is not a seas-side castle like so many of the other cottages. It's also older than most and was developed in phases. It's worth the tour if you're looking for something a little less over-the-top than the Breakers, or Marble House or Rosecliff.

    Distinguished older Newport mansion
Chateau sur Mer is one of the 9 mansions operated by the Newport Preservation Society. The mansion has free parking and is on Bellevue Ave. right by the local bus/trolley. Bellevue is a beautiful street with many large mansions. Chateau sur Mer was built in the 1850s by the Wetmore family whose son George, who was both a governor and senator, inherited the mansion and had it remodeled in the 1870s. The grounds are large and park like and the building is old fashioned and very lavish with beautiful wood and wonderful furnishings. It is not as opulent as the Breakers or Marble House, but is certainly worth a visit. The tour guide was an older man, with a very dry, witty sense of humor, who told wonderful stories about the family and the house. If you are visiting more than 1 or 2 mansions, the package tour of 5 mansions for $31 is a bargain since the mansions can be visited at any time and there is no time limit.
