We stayed in hotel in central Shijiazhuang, took taxi to the bus station, 8:30 AM bus from the station direct to Cangyan Mountain. The trip took about 1.5 hours approximately. It turned out to be a specifically tourist bus; it had a defined return time of 1:30 PM, which in my opinion was a little rushed (I could have used another 30-60 minutes). On the other hand, it was a very convenient, comfortable bus, direct non-stop route on good roads. We were the only non-Chinese on the bus, which I enjoyed as a cultural experience, and got to practice my Mandarin Chinese language skills. Lots of steps to climb on site, and a cable car which we rode down (you can take it up also). The landscape was very like a traditional Chinese painting, misty, craggy and wonderful; the temples and architecture interesting. I loved it. Something I can now check off my "bucket list". I am so glad I went.See more..

Yes the top of this hill/mountain has great views of the surrounding mountains and the valley beneath. It is popular to ride horses to the top, as there are many horses to choose from. The locals really push you to ride to the top instead of walk. Never the less we pushed on walking. Took us about 3 hours to get to the top. It was windy and cold up there as expected. Prepare food to take with you cos there is no or little (one) options at the bottom of the mountain. This is a path less traveled so it was really just us and maybe 20 other climbers in total climbing up the mountain at one time. Great day climb and perfect for a picnic at the top .See more..

The Great Wall at Dongjiakou is not for everyone. There is an initial one to two mile hike, sometimes steep to reach the wall. Those with difficulty walking will only be able to view it from the bottom. This section of the Great Wall is about 50 kilometers from the town of Qinhuangdao. You will need an in the know Chinese driver and or guide to find this location. Whether it is worth it to you to take an entire day or two to walk on a rugged and only sparsely restored part of the Wall is a personal decision you must make. For me and the few friends who accompanied me, this was a GREAT side trip to an area we know is authentic and original. We loved it. The hike in and climb to the wall can be done at a leisurely pace, so those who are a bit older, but able to walk and step up about 8 to 12" at a time will be able to make the climb. Take some snacks and water along. Not many places to eat, but as always your guide will be able to find some kind of restaurant in town, you just might not want to eat there. Again this depends on how adventurous you are in your eating habits. If you are picky or fastidious be sure and bring lots of snacks along with you. Enjoy!See more..
