  1. 4.5 Eastern Royal Tombs of the Qing Dynasty (64 reviews)
    - Qing Tombs in Summer, better than Ming tombs

I went to the Qing tombs with my family in summer 2013 and were lucky enough to be driven there by family in China. While it's quite faraway from the rest of the Beijing sites, it's worth a day's trip to Zunhua to see these tombs. After seeing the site in Beijing I was quite disappointed with the fake and refurbished state of the sites, and the inability to get up and close to the site. The Qing tombs have no been refurbished, but this does not take anything away from its grandness. You are able to get up to the buildings and there is very little people around, allowing you to take your time and not feel rushed by the people around you. The underground sites were amazing, very detailed and beautiful marble carvings. It's cold in there, even in the middle of summer, so do bring something to wear. Better to go to this site than the Ming tombs. See more..

The Western Qing tombs received far fewer visitors than the Eastern Qing tombs or the Ming Tombs. The tomb site itself is huge, and a driver is needed to go between the different tombs. Tai Ling tomb is the biggest and most impressive tombs, with a processional avenue over a mile longs. Chang Ling tomb has an impressive echo wall, where anything you say is bounced back seven times. Much of Chang Ling tomb was closed, but this meant the the whole place was abandoned. It was great to get photos of huge marble statues, bridges and processional roads without a single individual in sight. Chong Ling tomb has an impressive underground vault with huge carved doors. You can still see the holes were treasure hunters and tomb robbers broke their way in. Mu Ling tomb is small, and was being repaired when I visited. Yong fu temple is a scenic change to the numerous tombs. See more..

    - Very isolated from the city

This place is the temple built on the tomb of an early Emperor of Northern Qi Dynasty. Highly recommended not to go if it's raining because it won't be a pleasure to go as you walk or drive there. The road is very narrow and one way drive between the farms. For history lovers I think it's worth going once and combine the trip with the other tombs and museums around this area. Must rent a car and driver from this region to avoid getting lost. See more..
