We went here while on a 3 day short stay in the area. Very informative place to walk around and see how bad Germany was in WWII. Also, if you go here, make sure you go to the museum and pick up a map of the place. They even have one in English. The walk from the museum to the camp is 2.5 km.See more..

4.0Hunebed D53(44 reviews) - D53 : The Second Largest Grave Historic Sites
D53 with almost 19 m length and 4,5 m wide is quite a large grave. D53 is one of the largest grave that still have complete capstone and even the gate stone with its capstone. It's located along the road so it's also accessible for wheelchairs. The parking place is big enough even there's a lot parking place special for disables. On the other side of the road, 150 m to the east, there is another grave, D54. It might be very crowded because it's easily accessible and it's worth a visit.See more..
4.0Hunebed D52(43 reviews) - Good example of a stone age “Hunebed” Historic Sites
Hunebed D52 is a fine example of a stone age funeral monument built out of huge boulders. In those days they were covered with dirt. Now they are interesting to visit and perhaps the kids will even climb them. There is also a Hunebed museum in Borger. See more..
Amazing! This is a must do, if you like van Gogh. Unbelievable that this gets so little attention. This museum shows in a great way the period before van Gogh left for France. He lived here for more than 2 months. You can see and feel the presence of the great painter, see his room, the restaurant ..... The city of New Amsterdam (Veenoord) should give much more PR for this little but great museum. Every visitor gets a guided tour, which is very well done.See more..

4.0Hunebed D43(13 reviews) - Long grave in enclosure Spent < 1 hour Historic Sites • Points of Interest & Landmarks
Just 1.3 km from Emmen Railway station on the road to Odoorn is this 40m long grave site. Special because of its enclosure (stones in upright position), length and wideness (almost 7m). Unique in the Netherlands and testament of the first farmer's culture on our lands. Approximately 5000 years old.See more..

4.0Papeloze Kerk, Hunebed D49(10 reviews) - Small but Special Tuesday: 12:00 AM - 11:59 PM Spent < 1 hour Historic Sites • Points of Interest & Landmarks • Mysterious Sites
After the reconstruction in 1959, the grave looks at least like the original one. It's a small grave but very special one because it was a passage grave, a grave that consists of one or more burial chambers covered in earth or with stone. It's why you see that partly covered by a cover hill. Beside that , the name "Papeloze kerk" ( peopeless church) has also a history about preaching without a priest.See more..

This is a rather large hunebed. It is not the largest, but it's a decent size. This one is considered part of a trio because there are two others not too far away. Just like all of the other hunebedden, I would highly recommend this one to compare to the others!See more..

Dorpskerk ( Village church) is located at the end of the main street, the busiest area with all the shops, restaurants, supermarkets, B&B, hotel and others. 4.5Bonifatiuskerk Vries(3 reviews) - Beautiful 12th century church Spent 1-2 hours Historic Sites • Points of Interest & Landmarks • Churches & Cathedrals
The tower is more than 800 years old. The middle part in Roman style as well dates from the same period. The third Gothic section is early 15th century. Though perhaps not intentionally the three parts are linked up well. At first if you enter the church the light is rather dim, but once you reach the last part it is very light. Here a opened bible is positioned on the middle of a table. In the basement there is a small museum. It can be visited by appointment. During the summer months the church is open daily from 10AM to 5PM.See more..

2.5Dennenoord(3 reviews) - Once a village for the insane Historic Sites
In 1884 the civil authorities started the planning of Dennenoord as an institution for insane people. By the end of the 19th century the area was fully developed into a village in a village. The insane and their caretaker guards were behind a fence, grew their own food, had their own laundry facility, watersupply and church. By the 1950s the insane were declared patients in need of mental therapy and care. Dennenoord opened up and the fences were torn down. Nowadays psychiatric patients still receive care. A new organization Lentis manages the place. Dennenoord is open to the general public. There are two theme routes one can follow (poetry and trees). A guided tour is an option as well. Monuments on the terrain include the main building (hoofdgebouw) from 1895; watertower; church and director's house. All buildings are in a spacious park-like area.See more..
The name of this windmill speaks itself. Grenszicht ( Border view), the eight-sided flour mill is located near the border with Germany. We could climb the mill through the steep stairs and that you need go backwards down the stairs for your own safety. You will see Germany in the distance, quite chilly when you're up there. The mill was renovated and since 2002 there's a museum next to the mill. The museum represents the life round 1920 of the area that was the biggest peat-bog supplier in Europe. The miller are all volunteers that were very passionate to tell you everything you want to know about the local history and the mill. Very glad to make a stop at this place.See more..

It is a ecumenical church. Perhaps a good example of Dutch people, who are leaving a long period of religious division and strife behind them.
