  1. 3.5 Grote Kerk (8 reviews)
    - Exceptional tower
    Spent < 1 hour Churches & Cathedrals
    Grote Kerk image
The foundation of the tower is made of boulders. Until about 3m high the tooled boulders support the brick Roman style tower which dates back to the 1200s. The spire and adjacent neogothic church structure are relatively new (20th and 19th century respectively). The church is still being used by the Dutch reformed community in Emmen, but also serves as an exhibition hall and concert venue. The building can be rented for multiple purposes.. See more..

  3. 4.0 Dorpskerk Zuidlaren (4 reviews)
    - The Village Church
Spent 1-2 hours Historic Sites • Churches & Cathedrals
    Dorpskerk Zuidlaren image
Dorpskerk ( Village church) is located at the end of the main street, the busiest area with all the shops, restaurants, supermarkets, B&B, hotel and others. The church was not open at the time we're there. It's also a wedding location as it was written on the board outside the church. No other information about the opening time etc. We were here because our hotel is not far from this site. See more..
  4. 4.5 Bonifatiuskerk Vries (3 reviews)
    - Beautiful 12th century church
Spent 1-2 hours Historic Sites • Points of Interest & Landmarks • Churches & Cathedrals
    Bonifatiuskerk Vries image
The tower is more than 800 years old. The middle part in Roman style as well dates from the same period. The third Gothic section is early 15th century. Though perhaps not intentionally the three parts are linked up well. At first if you enter the church the light is rather dim, but once you reach the last part it is very light. Here a opened bible is positioned on the middle of a table. In the basement there is a small museum. It can be visited by appointment. During the summer months the church is open daily from 10AM to 5PM. See more..
  5. 4.5 Margarethakerk (3 reviews)
    - Old church in very old village
Points of Interest & Landmarks • Churches & Cathedrals
Evidence of settlement in the Norg area dates from 650 to 750 BC. The Margaretha church is 13th century which is old even by Dutch standards. At the time churches were built in Romanesque style with short semi-circular arches and rather dim interiors. The church is dedicated to Saint Margareth according to medieval legend a 15 year-old girl rebel who gave her life to defend her Christian faith. In the period May to October the church is open to visitors from 14:30 to 16:30 except on Sundays. See more..

    Adventskerk image
The Adventskerk in Assen was built in 1966 and belongs to the protestant congregation of the Vredenoord neighbourhood. It is quite a delicate little creature perched in a lovely park on the edge of the mental health institute GGZ Drenthe. It can be viewed by appointment only. See more..

Wow, what a find. This old church which was painted my monet has had its Tower restored and you are able to go up and view the whole of Amsterdam. It's about a 45 minute tour of the history of the church tower and you get to climb up through the bells and stand on the 360 viewing platform. Amazing experience and very cheap to do See more..
  9. 4.0 Oecumenische Dorpskerk Peize (1 review)
    - People of different beliefs together
Historic Sites • Points of Interest & Landmarks • Churches & Cathedrals
This 13th century Peize church with a tower built in 1803 in the center of the village is still in use by people of different beliefs. It is a ecumenical church. Perhaps a good example of Dutch people, who are leaving a long period of religious division and strife behind them. Cycled here from Assen railway station which is just 20 km away, but to hike 10 km to Peize from the city of Groningen through the Onlanden nature reserve is an option as well. See more..

    Ned.Herv.
Grote of Mariakerk image
