    - Great open air museum

We had a very enjoyable visit to this open air museum. The historic buildings are scattered through the woods making for a very pleasant walk around. There are some animals to see as well. You can enter the buildings and they are mocked up to show how people lived not that long ago. We were given a guide book in English for 1 Euro when we asked, worth it to explain what you're looking at. The inn/cafe halfway round was much better than expected with a quite extensive menu (not in English and as neither our German nor Dutch is up to much we guessed slightly. We had a lovely meal (savoury pancakes, sausage and chips) in a nice setting. Also a play park area for the kids. We visited with a boisterous 9 year old and another family. We all enjoyed the visit more than we expected. See more..

We found this little gem of a museum while visiting Drenthe province in the Netherlands. It houses the collection of sea shells and smaller sea animals all found by a dutch lady called Jeanne A.W. Warners (3 augustus 1899-3 juni 1986) on her travels to 80 different countries !! She started out as a nurse but later studied psychology at the University of Utrecht, sadly the second world war interrupted her studies. Later she opened a private practice of psychologie and started travelling. In 1955 she travelled to Palma de Mallorca from where she brought home her first shell the Bolinus brandaris (stekelhoorn). This inspired the rather strongwilled and exentric Jeanne to visit more than 80 countries searching for sea shells, crabs, starfish and other sea animals. She also visited universities abroad and saw it as her life mission to educate people about the sea and its inhabitants. Even Redmond O'Hanlon has found his way to this museum. The museum is small but very inviting and also geared toward educating the young. They develop different educational material for teaching different age groups. There is a small cafe and it has a nice gift shop. Well worth a visit if you are in the area. See more..
