  1. 4.5 Matsumoto Castle (3.623 reviews)
    - Matsumoto Castle
Friday: 8:30 AM - 5:00 PM Points of Interest & Landmarks • Castles • Scenic Walking Areas
    Matsumoto Castle image
My ancestors resided in Matsumoto Castle during the Tokugawa, Ieyasu era so it was a very person visit for my son and I. I appreciated that there are many docents inside the castle as it has steep stairways and they controlled the enter/exit way. I was bit anxious climbing down the stairs, but no one rushed me or told me to hurry. They provided plastic bags for our shoes and had benches to sit on to put them back on after the tour. Outside, we luckily saw a re-enactor with our family mon (crest) on his flag and we eagerly requested a photo with him (attached). I would highly recommend visiting this National Treasure of Japan (one of the few original standing castles in Japan). See more..

    Higashichaya Old Town image
A small neighborhood with old teahouses, quaint alleys, and countless restaurants and shops. It's about a 10-15 minute walk from Kenrokuen. You'll find everything from high-end sushi to Instagrammable gold flake-topped soft serve ice creams in Higashichaya. Most come to walk around and take photos in the picturesque alleys, walk along the river, or pop into the many cafes for a beverage. Many of the buildings look like homes, but don't be fooled, most of them are either a restaurant, a teahouse, or a shop. It's also a good area to buy unique souvenirs. Prepare for lots of tourist during busy seasons. See more..

    - If you don't want to pay for the Open Air Museum, the town also has Gassho-Zukuri Farmhouses
Spent 2-3 hours Points of Interest & Landmarks • Historic Walking Areas
The Historic Villages of Shirakawa-go Gassho Style Houses image
Shirakawa-Go is a UNESCO Heritage Site famous for their traditional Gassho-Zukuri Farmhouses. Basically the roof is constructed like hands in prayer. We spent 2 hours here as part of a Day Tour with Yokoso Japan. It gave us plenty of time to go to the Open Air Museum, walk up to the Observatory and walk around the Historic Village. Inside the Village, you will see examples of these farmhouses. However, the town is pretty touristy. Large buses came on a daily basis. We came on January 4 and unfortunately there wasn't much snow. But I did enjoy walking around the town. See more..

Hida Minzoka Mura Folk Village (Hida no Sato) image
Went here after a large drop of snow and the village looked stunning. Small cost to get in but we easily spent a couple of hours looking around the many old buildings - even took our shoes off in the freezing cold to walk through some of the old homes to see how these people lived hundreds of years ago. We went on the Monday that schools went back in Japan, and the place was empty which we loved. Kids got ring the giant bell and made a wish, while participating in the stamp hunt throughout the village. After also going to Shirakawago the following day, we felt this village was so much better than Shirakawago. See more..
  10. 4.0 Okage Yokocho (1.465 reviews)
    - Nice old town!
    Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Okage Yokocho image
It was Sunday and we came by here for a visit after visiting Ise Grand Shrine, that was just a stone's throw away from here. This is an old town with several streets where many restaurants, souvenir, art and craft shops, bakery and dessert shops etc are located. As it was Sunday, it was crowded and several shops had long queues as it was near lunch time. It was a nice place for one to learn about the history and culture, lifestyle and food culture of Mie and it's people and if you are into this, you will surely indulge in the nice ambience! 11. 4.5 Inuyama Castle (1.047 reviews)
    - Volunteer tour guide made this trip amazing!
Friday: 9:00 AM - 4:30 PM Historic Sites • Points of Interest & Landmarks • Castles
    Inuyama Castle image
We were pleasantly surprised to be offered a free tour - in English! - when we arrived at the castle entrance. The guide was very knowledgeable and gave us lots of insights to the castle's construction and history. The tour took about 45 minutes or so and really made the trip. Since most of the displays were only in Japanese, we would have had a very quick trip through the castle. I see some other reviewers commented on wearing socks and the steep stairs... I would recommend wearing less slippery socks if at all possible. My husband's socks were pretty slick compared to mine, so he had to be extra careful walking on the smooth wooden floors. This would not be a good place to visit if you have issues with stairs or heights, unless you just want to look around the gardens. See more..
  12. 4.5 Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route (1.033 reviews)
    - Check the weather!!!

    Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route image
Based on my experience, i was freezing cold up there because there are snow and raining at the same time. We have to struggle with a raincoat and umbrella and the wind was sooo strong. And please if u ave checked the weather is not good but you still intend o go there please dont bring ur kids. it is soo not un for the kids in that kind of weather. But anyway it was a very good experience for me because i like the adventurous kinda thing.

But just a reminder, the ticket counter will open at 6:50 am. And i suggest you dont have to buy the ticket up till Kurobe Dam if you are from Toyama. Maybe just until Murodo is fine. Because the last bus from Murodo is at 5:15pm. So u dont want to missed that bus and actually it will take a long hour to Kurobe Dam. In my case ive waste 7000yen for the ticket because i didnt have enough time to go to Kurobe Dam

    Kurobe Dam image
This dam is pretty impressive, especially at the time from July when they open it partially and you can see tons of water flowing through the dam walls. We passed the dam as part of crossing the Alpine Pass and I guess that 95% or more of people visiting this attraction will do the same. They've also got some nice exhibitions showing with how much efforts the dam was built. Prepare to stay 1 to 2 hours. See more..

  20. 4.5 The Museum Meijimura (499 reviews)
    - A meaningful museum
Friday: 9:30 AM - 5:00 PM Spent 2-3 hours Points of Interest & Landmarks • Architectural Buildings • History Museums
    The Museum Meijimura image
Beautifully located on a hillside facing Lake Iruka, it occupies an area of 1,000,000m2, where currently over sixty Meiji buildings have been brought and rebuilt. On display inside the buildings are furniture and other items of interst, objects of reference related to the respective buildings, and temporary exhibitions of historic materials as occasions call. The Meiji-mura offers the Japanese people a place of social education, where they can discover and have first-hand contact with the form and spirit of the Meiji period. We also believe that the Meiji-mura, as an evidence of East-West cultural exchange, can be helpful to enhance mutual understanding between the peoples of Japan and other countries of the world. 21. 4.0 Maruoka Castle (351 reviews)
    - Worth entering the castle
Friday: 8:30 AM - 5:00 PM Historic Sites • Points of Interest & Landmarks • Castles
    Maruoka Castle image
It is free to explore the grounds and look at the castle, but 300 Yen to enter the castle, and also a small museum in a seperate building. Definitely worth entering the castle, an original old Japanese castle, for the views of the surrounding area. It used to be used as a watchtower, and from the views it commands it is easy to see why. Once inside, be ready to climb to get to the top floors of the tower, using very steep stairs with a rope to help you. Worth the effort to get up there. Walking around the outside of the castle is also very interesting, and in summer there are a lot of insects, butterflies, birds, and flowers to see. There is also a small garden, with a koi pond, and a shop/cafe in the grounds. (The museum is the 'Sakaide City Maruoka Museum of History and Folklore', included in the castle ticket) See more..

It is a laid back town with a traditional feel. A lot of interesting things to see. Great place to shop, eat, rest and take pictures. Met a few elderly shop owners who took great pride in the things that they were selling. They were enthusiastic in introducing their products but not pushy in making sales. See more..
  23. 4.5 Ponshukan (340 reviews)
    - Unique Experience
Friday: 9:30 AM - 7:00 PM Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Ponshukan image
Love the experience here. I don't normally drink sake, but it was worth the experience to come and taste the local specialty here, it being a producer of good quality rice. One pays 500 yen, you get a cup and 5 tokens to get to taste different sake using the vending spouts. Most costs 100 yen for each taste while others cost 200 yen. There's a top 10 list in case you're not familiar with the different sake, but the choices are endless. You can also buy bottles of sake from the adjacent store. There is also a heating station for preparing hot sake. There's also a marketplace just outside of this area, which sells all kinds of sake, as well as their local delicacies like their Koshikihari rice and other rice products. See more..

    Kazuemachi Tea House Street image
Kanazawa boasts three active geisha districts, aka the "tea" streets. All are well worth a visit, and each is distinctive. As the "smallest" of the three, Kazuemachi is sometimes overlooked, a great shame as its riverside location, cafes and shops, and during cherry blossom season, gorgeous ephemeral trees all make it well worth an afternoon's stroll. 25. 4.5 Ainokura Gassho Community (296 reviews)
    - Breathtaking

    Ainokura Gassho Community image
I read about Ainokura in Lonely Planet and from that point on I made sure that I had to go out to visit there. I stayed in Toyama, not far from the train station, hired a car for the day and drove out to Ainokura. It was so worth it! It's such a beautiful village and was a beautiful way to experience traditional Japanese hospitality and living. It really is a must! It's like you've stepped back in time into a fairytale. Make sure you visit the Gokayama tourist information centre and Murakami House before you make the drive to Ainokura. When you're at the visitor centre make sure you put a sticker on the map of where you're from, my family were the first visitors from Samoa to place a sticker there. See more..
  26. 4.5 Zuiryuji Temple (288 reviews)
    - Remarkable National Treasure
Friday: 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Zuiryuji Temple image
I had a most remarkable visit to this temple. The heritage masterpiece of Takaoka. The temple was constructed by the third head of the Kaga Domain, as the family temple of founder of Takaoka Maeda Toshinaga. Typical Zen layout with Sanmon Gate and Budsiden Main Hall. The complex is a dedicated National Treasure. Lots of awe inspiring architecture to see here. Manicured lawns so impressive. Entry is 500yen. I asked on my way out if they could call a taxi so I could return to my hotel. Much to my surprised they brought the temple van and took me to my hotel, refusing to take any payment for the journey. Such kindness. I am very much indebted to their kindness and consideration. See more..

    Ichijodani Asakurashi Ruin image
We were fortunate to visit the Ruins with a Goodwill Guide who explained the history of the area and provided details about the buildings and the site as we walked thru the recreated town. We visited the garden areas of the feudal lord's residence, entering thru the reconstructed gate. Climbing the hill behind the residence area, we had a view of the beautiful valley. It would be a wonderful place to enjoy a picnic or read a book. See more..
  28. 4.5 Chureito Pagoda (233 reviews)
    - Postcard Worthy View of Fuji
    Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Chureito Pagoda image
This is one of the most picturesque spots to get a view of Mount Fuji. The mountain tends to be covered by clouds so do some research on the best times to visit. We were there over winter which has a high chance of a clear view. We made it to the top just before sunrise and had an amazing view! It's quite a climb up the hill or stairs but it is beyond worth it. You can get to the Pagoda easily by train from Kawaguchiko. Highly recommend sacrificing a night of sleep to get here before sunrise to have the place to yourself and watch the sun come up! See more..
