4.0Higashichaya Old Town(2.622 reviews) - A well-preserved tea district with numerous teahouses, restaurants, and shops Spent < 1 hour Historic Sites • Neighborhoods • Points of Interest & Landmarks
A small neighborhood with old teahouses, quaint alleys, and countless restaurants and shops. It's about a 10-15 minute walk from Kenrokuen. You'll find everything from high-end sushi to Instagrammable gold flake-topped soft serve ice creams in Higashichaya. Most come to walk around and take photos in the picturesque alleys, walk along the river, or pop into the many cafes for a beverage. Many of the buildings look like homes, but don't be fooled, most of them are either a restaurant, a teahouse, or a shop. It's also a good area to buy unique souvenirs. Prepare for lots of tourist during busy seasons.See more..

4.5Hakuba(305 reviews) - Family ski holiday with older teenagers Neighborhoods • Ski & Snowboard Areas
Great resort!!! Fabulous Japanese food everywhere and also good western options. 10/10 for food in the villages. Bus services everywhere are EXCELLENT making all the ski resorts accessible. Really good place to come for a ski trip! There were people here with toddlers and I’m sure it’s manageable but I think it must be tricky to have the younger ones this year with the lower slopes closed. See more..
4.5Gokayama(300 reviews) - Ainokura is beautiful; picturesque and no crowds Friday: 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM Neighborhoods
First visited a few years ago and absolutely loved it, so decided to revisit it again earlier this year. For those taking public transport, it's a very long journey...but sooo worth it! There are 2 gassho-zukuri villages in Gokayama - Ainokura and Suganuma. Suganuma is a fairly small village with less than 10 houses, Ainokura is slightly bigger and more photogenic. Perched on the side of a mountain, the village of Ainokura is very picturesque. Especially in summer when skies are blue, grass is green and flowers are blooming. Both times when I went, there were no other foreign tourists and not much of crowd. Minshuku/staying overnight in one of the houses is available here too. I would definitely recommend Gokayama over Shirakawago if you have the time.See more..
