Schloss Hellbrunn, Austrian Alps, Austria

4.5 (3.012 reviews) Spent Ranking #11 in Austrian Alps Castles

A worthwhile excursion

Hellbrunn is a fun place to visit if you have the time. It's a bit out of the city but easy to get to by bus (#25 from the train station). The ticket to the garden with the trick fountains is time stamped although once you are inside you can take as much time as you like. The grounds outside the fountains are free and quite pleasant to wander around on as well. The trick fountains are fun although not as surprising as I expected - for one thing there is no danger of your getting soaked unless you purposefully try as they have staff around operating them on and off. The ones coming out of the seats is in a place where you just sit or stand around to watch - no one would be sitting on the fountain stools when they go off. The ticket includes the little Folk Art museum on a steep hill so that's worth a visit for the view if you don't mind the climb.

    Fun expansive property
Worth the trip out to Hellbrunn. Easy, quick and affordable trip out on the bus. The trick fountains are a blast and amazing. Totally surprised by the fountains, and the staff seemed to have a lot of fun with it. The fountains are great for warmer weather ;) the folklore museum is worth the small hike up. The folklore museum had a very cool exhibit on the heart that was good for kids. And the hike out to the stone theatre and the view of untersberg is also worth the view and to be in a forest and nature. It was great for kids as there is lots of different fountains to see and the hikes are fun to run around and don’t require anyone to be quiet. There is also a huge playground for kids on the property. The indoor museum had some nice exhibits and added to my beginners understanding of Salzburg and it’s history.

    A lot of fun
It didn’t start well as you are shepherded as part of a group in the garden. They ask you to smile as you go in, so they can take a photo. Honestly, I was ready to walk away. Everyone goes to the first stop together as a guide tells you about the fountain. After that you walk around with your audio guide. It was such fun seeing people trying to avoid getting wet and some just getting soaked. The fountains are beautiful and fun. Inside the house there are all sorts of artefacts collected by the eccentric owner. I was on my own and loved it. I would imagine families would have a great time. It is just a bizarre place. Don’t get put off by the first ten minutes!
