Amazing views

This amazing 11th-century castle overlooks Salzburg from a hill on the outskirts of the city. Fortress Hohensalzburg is a real eye-catcher, high above the Baroque towers of the city. The castle remains a visible landmark to this day and is an unmistakable feature of Salzburg’s world-famous skyline. From afar, the mighty walls begin to reveal the history visitors experience at first hand within these sturdy defenses. Opening hours: We are open for you 365 days a year - even on public holidays! Very well organised. Views are superb
We elected to take the walk up to the castle. This does not take too long, 10 minutes or so and the paths are good. We purchased the ‘all inclusive ticket’ which allows a free funicular trip back down but instead we walked back along the cliff towards the Modern Art Museum where the lift back down from there is also included in the ticket price. This made for a good half day excursion. The self guided tour is well organised with good information boards along the way. The ticket also includes entry to several museums which we found only mildly interesting but the castle is worth going to both for the views along the battlements and the sumptuous Regency Rooms, part of the original apartments. The only serious congested area was around the viewing platform at the top where access is quite limited.

Best to visit in off season to avoid the crowds
We took the train to Salzburg and this fortress was an unforgettable sight as the train approached the city, sitting high atop a hill. Right there we decided this would be the first sight to see the next day. We got to the bottom of the cable car going up the hill just before noon and there was a long line getting tickets which includes the ride. Later we also discovered that you can walk up the very steep hill and about 3 quarters of the way up you'd still have to get an entrance ticket but without the ride (a savings of 3 euros). Anyway it being a Sunday in July the entire place inside and out was extremely crowded, at many points we'd had to wait as they were trying to keep the numbers under control. It's definitely the number one sight in Salzburg to see but off season with fewer people would make it a lot more enjoyable. The ride is roundtrip but it was a pleasant and easy walk down the hill if you are not in a rush.
