4.5Jefferson General Store(361 reviews) - Love the general store old-time feel Tuesday: 9:00 AM - 6:00 PM Speciality & Gift Shops
Stepping back in time here with old wooden floors, lots of retro metal signs, candy and soda fountain, plus modern t-shirts and jams, jellies, and decor. Smells like Sugar! Enjoyed just poking around and found some cool gifts to take back. Reminded me of Fredericksburg shopping. Plus, the iconic blue pick up with the pumpkins is a photo-op.See more..
4.5Jefferson Historical Museum(216 reviews) - Fun and informative. Tuesday: 9:30 AM - 4:00 PM Spent < 1 hour Speciality Museums
Great way to learn the history of Jefferson. 4 floors of history. This was the old courthouse and you can still see the signs above the doors telling you which was the jury room, court room, etc. The first floor was also the old post office. The docent was very friendly and knowledgeable about the history of the town. All the exhibits were donated, so you get a bit of everything, even portraits donated from NY and Calif. The best part is admission gets you into the miniature railroad inn back. The mini railroad search and fid was fun.See more..
went on a Friday night and the gourd was and 75 to 80 people. Our tour guide was excellent She is very knowledgeable on the history of the town and the buildings. She is also a very good story teller. the tour was about 2 1/2 hours long, mainly due to the size of the group. You do a lot of walking, so it is important to wear comfortable shoes See more..
Oakwood Cemetery is north of downtown Jefferson, just off North Alley Street, Which runs off Highway 45. East on 45 from Highway 59, then left on N. Alley Street. Cross the railroad tracks and look for the cemetery on the right. Some of the more famous graves are those of Diamond Bessie, a prostitute killed by her jeweler, lover and Jessie Robinson and Bill Rose. Rose and Robinson were friends who killed each other. Their graves are marked by a chain between two iron posts, as their caskets were supposedly chained together because they were so close in life, and had no other friends. The grave of gunfighter, outlaw, Cullen Baker is in Oakwood. He is the subject of several non fiction books, and of several fictionalized accounts by Louis L'amour. In addition, the cemetery is the resting place of those who were powerful and not so powerful, that contributed to the history of Jefferson. Very quiet and serene on our last visit, and recommended to all interested in history.See more..
What a great tour. You have to go to the hotel to get tickets, and tours are 1-3pm. The Docent grew up in Jefferson, and shares a lot of her personal history growing up in Jefferson. Very interesting tour and the train car looks like it has never aged. Good chance to cool off and get out of the heat. About 30 minute tour.See more..
Located near town center and easy to find, we thoroughly enjoyed this boat ride down the Big Cyprus Bayou. The tour guide is a retired Federal Game Warden who has worked in Parks from the Mexican border to the Canadian border. But he grew up right around this East Texas bayou, and he looks and sounds like he just emerged from these deep piney woods. Don’t expect excitement but do expect some beautiful scenery and local lure. We thoroughly enjoyed the experience (suitable for little kids and old people with bad knees like me).See more..

I have visited the Jefferson Ordnance Magazine many time over the years and each time it seems the Big Cypress Bayou bank gets closer and closer to the historic building. It is truly a valuable experience to visit such a historic treasure. It can be seen from the river if you are in a boat or from the opposite bank if you are riding on the Historic Jefferson Railway. Hopefully in the near future guided tours may come available. You can visit the HJF website for more information, www.historijeffersonfoundation.com This building has been entered into the most endangered buildings in Texas and donations are graciously accepted to help stabilize the river bank.See more..

The town has made a nice effort to attract visitors with interesting antique, gift and similar stores. Several interesting restaurants. Easy to find parking and most everything is within a few walking minutes. It was a very pleasant couple of hours and a nice escape from the bustle and traffic of DFW.
