Oakwood Cemetery, Texas, United States

Time Travel

Oakwood Cemetery is north of downtown Jefferson, just off North Alley Street, Which runs off Highway 45. East on 45 from Highway 59, then left on N. Alley Street. Cross the railroad tracks and look for the cemetery on the right. Some of the more famous graves are those of Diamond Bessie, a prostitute killed by her jeweler, lover and Jessie Robinson and Bill Rose. Rose and Robinson were friends who killed each other. Their graves are marked by a chain between two iron posts, as their caskets were supposedly chained together because they were so close in life, and had no other friends. The grave of gunfighter, outlaw, Cullen Baker is in Oakwood. He is the subject of several non fiction books, and of several fictionalized accounts by Louis L'amour. In addition, the cemetery is the resting place of those who were powerful and not so powerful, that contributed to the history of Jefferson. Very quiet and serene on our last visit, and recommended to all interested in history.

    Like New Orleans
We love to visit cemeteries because they offer so much history and can tell you a lot about the city and the people who live/lived there. Oakwood reminds me of St Louis in New Orleans. The cemetery is divided up by faith and by family, so, again, it offers a lot to see regarding the history. Be sure to visit the grave for Diamond Bessie as well as the grave of the two outlaws marked with a simple chain between two posts. I'll not include the stories here so you will go visit and learn them there.

Visited After a Tour of the Grove
Um... I don't want to be disrespectful of the dearly departed but we toured this cemetery after visiting the Grove. There is a lot of history in this place and after reading some of the local history and familiarizing ourselves with the names of notable people we had to take this trip. We found the grave of Mrs. Diamond Bessie and a few other graves with names attached to historical events in Jefferson. It's a must see if you have familiarized yourself with the local history of this awesome little bayou town.
