The history of the home is fascinating; it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and is a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark. Along with the history, though, you'll hear ghost stories from the owners and find out just what it's like to live in a haunted home. Come visit The Grove for a peek into Jefferson's past... and a few residents who may still be hanging around! See more..

Tommy, our host and tour guide, showed us his historic B&B and then ushered us to his upscale 8 person golf cart. Very comfortable ride and could hear even to the back of the cart due to mic and speakers. The tales were funny and the history enlightening. We criss-crossed all over town before returning. He even suggested some great places to shop and eat before leaving town. Would definitely recommend! See more..

    Jefferson Historical Museum image
Great way to learn the history of Jefferson. 4 floors of history. This was the old courthouse and you can still see the signs above the doors telling you which was the jury room, court room, etc. The first floor was also the old post office. The docent was very friendly and knowledgeable about the history of the town. All the exhibits were donated, so you get a bit of everything, even portraits donated from NY and Calif. The best part is admission gets you into the miniature railroad inn back. The mini railroad search and fid was fun. See more..
  12. 4.5 Oakwood Cemetery (79 reviews)
    - Time Travel
    Cemeteries
    Oakwood Cemetery image
Oakwood Cemetery is north of downtown Jefferson, just off North Alley Street, Which runs off Highway 45. East on 45 from Highway 59, then left on N. Alley Street. Cross the railroad tracks and look for the cemetery on the right. Some of the more famous graves are those of Diamond Bessie, a prostitute killed by her jeweler, lover and Jessie Robinson and Bill Rose. Rose and Robinson were friends who killed each other. Their graves are marked by a chain between two iron posts, as their caskets were supposedly chained together because they were so close in life, and had no other friends. The grave of gunfighter, outlaw, Cullen Baker is in Oakwood. He is the subject of several non fiction books, and of several fictionalized accounts by Louis L'amour. In addition, the cemetery is the resting place of those who were powerful and not so powerful, that contributed to the history of Jefferson. Very quiet and serene on our last visit, and recommended to all interested in history. See more..

  14. 4.5 Turning Basin Riverboat Tours (66 reviews)
    - A peaceful boat ride down a bayou - very scenic
    Boat Tours
    Turning Basin Riverboat Tours image
Located near town center and easy to find, we thoroughly enjoyed this boat ride down the Big Cyprus Bayou. The tour guide is a retired Federal Game Warden who has worked in Parks from the Mexican border to the Canadian border. But he grew up right around this East Texas bayou, and he looks and sounds like he just emerged from these deep piney woods. Don’t expect excitement but do expect some beautiful scenery and local lure. We thoroughly enjoyed the experience (suitable for little kids and old people with bad knees like me). See more..

    Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Jefferson Ordnance Magazine image
I have visited the Jefferson Ordnance Magazine many time over the years and each time it seems the Big Cypress Bayou bank gets closer and closer to the historic building. It is truly a valuable experience to visit such a historic treasure. It can be seen from the river if you are in a boat or from the opposite bank if you are riding on the Historic Jefferson Railway. Hopefully in the near future guided tours may come available. You can visit the HJF website for more information, www.historijeffersonfoundation.com This building has been entered into the most endangered buildings in Texas and donations are graciously accepted to help stabilize the river bank.
