Things to do & places to visit in Scottish Highlands, United Kingdom

Scottish Highlands cover image
The moody, romantic Scottish Highlands start at Loch Lomond just north of Glasgow. Comprising a slew of mountain ranges, this sparsely populated land is best seen by train on the West Highland Line. Mountains, lochs, bright heather and rhododendrons give way to white sand beaches and rugged coves as the train nears Mallaig. For a more active take on the region, hike the West Highland Way or visit the Trossachs National Park. Ben Nevis, a popular climbing spot, looms over the town of Fort William.

Scottish Highlands #21 destination in United Kingdom 2023. The average rating score is 4.56 based on 54.9k traveler reviews, of 31 attractions. Timezone: Europe/London, current date and time: Monday, May 06, 2024, 0:28.

  1. 5.0 Cairngorm Reindeer Herd (1.729 reviews)
    - It’s a must do!
Monday: 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM Nature & Wildlife Tours
    Cairngorm Reindeer Herd image
What an incredible experience! Truly we had an amazing time. The guides were kind and knowledgeable. For my husband and myself this trip was lovely just the two of us, however this is an event for children and those older alike! Being up close and personal with reindeer as well as seeing the surroundings was an amazing activity to add on to any vacation you might be planning. I would plan to make it an all day event. Allot the morning for the paddock hike and trail hiking, the remainder of the day enjoying breakfast or lunch at the outlook cafe (we recommend the macaroni and brownies) and the rest of your time exploring the small shops and cafes! 2. 5.0 Glencoe National Nature Reserve (1.454 reviews)
    - Amazing Vistor Center Staff and Amazing Day Activities for all Age!

    Glencoe National Nature Reserve image
The National Trust for Scotland cares for Glencoe National Nature Reserve, a 14,000 acre estate with 60 kilometres of footpaths for you to explore, marvel at the panoramic mountain views and spot internationally-renowned wildlife. Glencoe is a natural wonder, the remnants of a 'caldera' or super-volcano, formed many millions of years ago and later shaped by glaciers during numerous Ice Ages. Its history is a poignant one, most famed for the 'Massacre' of 1692 and more recently as a playground for pioneering mountaineers and climbers. Find out more or support the conservation work of Glencoe's Ranger team at the NTS Glencoe Visitor Centre at the western end of the Glen. See more..
  3. 5.0 Bealach na Ba Road (1.002 reviews)
    - Incredible road, but selfish motorists
    Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Bealach na Ba Road image
Wow! What an absolutely breathtaking drive, one of the best roads I’ve ever driven in my life, if not the best, scenery was unbelievable, however I have one qualm with this road, this qualm being that people seriously need to stop coming over this road in Motorhomes, it is dangerous and selfish, the road is only just wide enough for two cars let alone, a Motorhome. We passed the over it today, in very foggy conditions Motorhome in front of us failed to use his lights, as did many other people on the road, thank god he pulled over, before we got to the hairpin section as complete gridlock ensued with myself and my son only just getting through, we were at the bottom of the pass 15 minutes later before we could see the Motorhome behind us had cleared the queue, any Motorhome driver using this road must be classed as selfish and inconsiderate, the signs at the bottom of the road says “not advisable” for motorhomes and very large vehicles however in my opinion they should not be allowed at all. Apart from this, it was absolutely unbelievable would seriously recommend, in a car, or motorbike, but keep yours wits about you and remain alert 100% of the time, also be very disappointed by Applecross, there is nothing there. Lookouts
    Duncansby Head image
Stunning views out across the wild, unpredictable, and notorious Pentland Firth towards Stroma and Orkney, and then the other way out across the North Sea. On a clear day, Dunnet Head, the most northerly point of the British mainland, can be seen to the northwest. Scotland isn't some kind of Disney theme park, so in these rural areas expect sheep droppings, farm smells, tractors, rain, mist, clouds and wind as well as blistering sunshine and clear blue skies. Please don't forget that these stunning locations are also home and the workplace of local people. Fans of the BBC Shipping Forecast will recognise Duncansby Head, so next time you tune in you will be able to relive your visit. See more..

  7. 4.5 Urquhart Castle (5.529 reviews)
    - Urquhart Castle
Monday: 9:30 AM - 5:00 PM Spent 1-2 hours Historic Sites • Castles
    Urquhart Castle image
Discover 1,000 years of drama, experience a glimpse of medieval life and enjoy stunning views over Loch Ness from the ruins of the greatest castle in the Highlands. Climb the Grant Tower that watches over the iconic loch, peer into a miserable prison cell, said to have held the legendary Gaelic bard Domhnall Donn, and imagine the splendid banquets staged in the great hall. A more comfortable view of the iconic ruins, against a backdrop of Loch Ness and the hills of the Great Glen, can be enjoyed from the café. Urquhart’s stories are also told through a remarkable collection of artefacts left by its residents, historic replicas, including a full-sized, working trebuchet siege engine, and a short film. The castle has a distinctly Highland heritage and the site has witnessed some of the most dramatic chapters in our nation’s history. This is where St Columba is said to have worked miracles in the 6th century, where acts of chivalry and defiance provided inspiration during the Wars of Independence and where the MacDonald Lords of the Isles struggled with the Crown for power. 16. 4.5 Fort George (1.817 reviews)
    - My favourite place to visit
Monday: 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM Historic Sites • Military Bases & Facilities
    Fort George image
Fort George is the mightiest artillery fortification in Britain. Following the 1746 defeat at Culloden of Bonnie Prince Charlie, George II created the ultimate defence against further Jacobite unrest. The result, Fort George, is the mightiest artillery fortification in Britain, if not Europe. Its garrison buildings, artillery defences bristling with cannon, and superb collection of arms - including bayoneted muskets, pikes, swords and ammunition pouches - provide a fascinating insight into 18th century military life. 19. 4.5 Glenfinnan Viaduct (1.556 reviews)
    - Wish Harry Potter hadn't been involved!!
Spent < 1 hour Historic Sites • Points of Interest & Landmarks • Bridges
    Glenfinnan Viaduct image
Walking around Glenfinnan, it's difficult to be able to really appreciate the viaduct and area as it is teaming with people, I understand pre Harry Potter the location was alot more peaceful, it's a shame. I just managed to find a seat in the picnic area, where you can see the viaduct, and take a walk under. However, I was going to walk upto the railway station, and was making the journey from Mallaig to Glasgow the next day-Book a seat on the limited Scotrail services, rather than The Jacobite, and you get the opportunity to travel a magnificent line, the views were beautiful See more..

  21. 4.5 Steall Waterfall (1.495 reviews)
    - Highly recommend.
    Waterfalls
    Steall Waterfall image
Got a taxi from where I was staying to the top car park. The ride there was spectacular enough. Glad I had proper boots on for grip, as quite a few rocky bits to walk over. When I got out from the woods and into the bottom of the Glen suddenly you see the falls in the distance and the breeze was cooler. Walked across the wire bridge at 5’2” with slightly short arms it was a challenge. Coming back two walkers offered to spot me as I crossed for which I was grateful. The loveliest walk with great scenery. See more..
