   Hortus Haren is one of the oldest and largest botanical gardens in the Netherlands. The Chinese garden is unique in Europe and is designed by a famous Chinese landscape architect. You can walk behind the waterfall and smell the great fragrances of the plants. The Laarman garden has many plants which are nominated in the endangered species lists and is part of the National Plant Collection. In the Celtic garden you can look for your birthday tree. Children can do a scavenger hunt or climb the rock garden. There are frequently exhibitions of paintings and sculptures. New are the Hondsrug garden (which is part of the UNESCO Park The Hondsrug) and the 4000m2 butterfly and bee's garden. During your visit you can have a lunch in the Grand Cafe The Plantage, the Hortus Café or the Chinese Teahouse and there is a very great gift and Plants shop.    I was curious to hear the story of the unusual statue ,it was told to me by one of my Dutch relatives,during my last visit in Groningen. Any tourist is welcomed by the horse of uncle Loeks in front of the railway station ,why there ,I have no idea .The statue was created by an artist ,being a symbol of the local culture .Long time ago ,a farmer who had a stable in the area ,lost his racing horse ,that got sick and died .A legend says that the butcher came to take the horse ,you can imagine how upset was his master ,children or maybe his friends invented a silly song about uncle Luke's horse...I can imagine the protest of locals when they tried to remove the statue temporarily ,..    Tenaxx Estate is a beautiful park with woods and an arboretum (collection of trees) which specializes in weeping trees. In the woods you are confronted with life-size roaring dinosaurs. Kids can hunt smaller dino’s with a laser gun. Indoors you find the Dino-Experience, with replicas, skeletons and skulls of dinosaurs. Children can excavate the skeleton of a T-Rex. It very much reflects the thinking about human sexuality in the 1990s. Meanwhile third gender people or people who do not feel comfortable in either box are demanding attention and space.    We were in Delfzijl to visit family & were pleasantly surprised that this historic wind mill is located in the centre of town. We were also fortunate to arrive during the coronation of the new King & enjoyed the party like atmosphere!! This historic structure is part of weekly local markets & gathering place for special occasions. You can also walk short distance to the local restaurants & bars to enjoy the Dutch cuisine.    Het mooie gelegen recreatiecentrum De Otter ligt vlak aan het Schildmeer en biedt een waaier aan mogelijkheden wat overnachten en recreatie betreft. Logeermogelijkheden staan uitgebreid beschreven op hun website http://www.de-otter.nl. Wijzelf hadden een trekkershut comfort geboekt en deze was gewoonweg fantastisch. Een mooie hut met terras en tuinmeubeltjes. En onze grote honden waren welkom mits ze aangelijnd bleven. Het RC de Otter bezit een jachthaven en je kan er zeilboten, motorboten, kano's, surfplanken, fietsen, skelters en grote steps huren. Of er met je zeilboot naartoe gaan. Op het Schildmeer kan je tevens vissen en zwemmen. In contact blijven met de buitenwereld? Geen probleem dankzij hun draadloos internetsysteem. Kortom, of je nu voor een weekendje gaat of een langer verblijf, recreatiecentrum De Otter biedt de meest perfecte logies en attracties aan. Wij gaan zeker terug. See more..

   We kwamen hier aan in het voorseizoen en werden heel hartelijk ontvangen. De voorzieningen zijn prima, schone douches en toiletten. Ook is er een restaurant waar je tegen een redelijke prijs lekker kunt eten. Op zaterdagavond wordt er een barbecue georganiseerd als er voldoende animo voor is (minimaal 10 personen).     From the entrance, you only see the detached tower and after passing this tower you will see that it's a quite big church. The church was built in the 13th century and has a late Romanesque style but then the gothic style was added as you can see by the windows. The church tower self was built in the 15th century.     Mariakerk (Maria church) of Oosterwijtwerd is one of the oldest brick churches in the province of Groningen. It looks like a small church but when you walk in the graveyard and around the church, it is quite a big church for this small village. It was not open at the time we're there. See more..
