Wow, what a great experience! Already know the church, from concerts en exhibitions. But this very special occasion will not be fast forgotten. After an enthousiast story by a volunteer, we got helmets and climbed the very small stairs to the first level and than even higher... we ended near the clocktower. Which we couldnt climb because of the bat colony sleeping in wintertime... But wow! interesting and impressive. See more..

    Sint Geertruidsgasthuis image
I had three almhouses on my list ,I discovered the Holy Spirit hospice on Polsterstraat ,not very far from the centre ,In fact I was looking for Paperstraat ,but I lost my way . The hospice was founded in the 13 th century by the Orde van de Helige Geest ,order of the Holy Spirit, their symbol is the double St Andrew's cross ,it can be seen in several places. The hospice took care of sick old people ,poor and elderly .There is an old church there ,but it was closed .The big complex is built around three courtyards where I met old people sitting in front of their door ,enjoying the sun ,they were very kind and I asked permission to take photos.Visit this unique guest house ,it is another mirror of the historic past ... 3. 4.0 Sint Martinusparochie (8 reviews)
    - Lovely church in the centre

    Sint Martinusparochie image
As you stroll about the centre of Groningen don't forget to pop into this church, the oldest one in the town. Others have written eloquently about the interior, although I don't see anyone mentioning the organ, which is what I really went for. The oldest pipes date from early 15th century, but the instrument is mainly built by Arp Schnitger, the great baroque organ builder of North Germany. Unfortunately it was not being played at the time. I'll have come back another time. Meanwhile I bought a CD. See more..

    Toren Kerk Uitwierde image
The church of Uitwierde is a Dutch Reformed church in neoclassical style from 1839 with a separate church tower from the 13th century. There are two old gravestones on the wall, at both side of the church entrance. It's so special because these two are the oldest monument of Delfzijl. From the information board, the church tower seems to have spectacular staircase. Unfortunately the tower was closed. See more..

    Kerk van Zandeweer image
From the entrance, you only see the detached tower and after passing this tower you will see that it's a quite big church. The church was built in the 13th century and has a late Romanesque style but then the gothic style was added as you can see by the windows. The church tower self was built in the 15th century. It was not open due to the covid so we walked around in the graveyard. See more..

    - Lovely old church

Built in 1605 the Dutch reformed church in Grijpskerk is of simple design fitting the peaceful village surroundings. The green entourage adds to the fine impression. The rectory is in close vicinity and dates from the same period. There are three more churches in Grijpskerk. Quite many, as the village has a population of just under 3000. Cycled here from Groningen city which is just 20 km away. See more..
  15. 4.0 Kloosterkerk Ten Boer (2 reviews)
    - 13th century Abbeychurch
Spent 1-2 hours Historic Sites • Points of Interest & Landmarks • Churches & Cathedrals
    Kloosterkerk Ten Boer image
This 13th century church used to be an abbeychurch. The Benedictine abbey was abolished in 1485 and ever since the church served the local Christian community. The rectangular building in Romano-Gothic style underwent thorough restoration in 1565. The small tower (dakruiter) was added in 1810 as the earlier free standing tower had been demolished. Remarkable is that while new houses have been built in the direct vicinity of the church a respectful gate-like opening was reserved in order to ensure access to the medieval church. See more..
  16. 4.5 Andreaskerk (2 reviews)
    - A Church with Special Choir
Spent 1-2 hours Churches & Cathedrals
    Andreaskerk image
Andreaskerk was built in the 13th century. From outside, the church looks very simple but when you get inside and see the interior, it has very special interior. The floor of the church is originally mainly covered with green glazed floor tiles. At the choir there is a supper table with an old bible on it, some tombstones (oldest from 1713) and the remains of a sacrament house. There is also a gentlemen's couch at the opposite of the pulpit. The atmosphere is very serene. Do visit this church when you're in the neighbourhood See more..

On an elevation with a ditch around it, in the middle of the village of Stedum, this is an imposing building with tower. Built in the 1200s financed by the Groninger upper class. One of its members Adriaan Clant has a stunning Baroque style tomb inside the church. Note the beautifully carved putti (chubby child)! See more..

    - Extraordinary

    Ezinger Kerk image
13th Century church with detached tower standing solidly on an elevation in flat surroundings. The church is of a simple Roman style design. It is basically one hall. The tower is nearby and linked to a small house, where the sexton used to live and at some point served as a school. The elevation or 'wierd' is man made and used to protect the locals against floods. Just imagine for more than 700 years these buildings on the wierd have been there, testament of a proud past during which the people of Groningen struggled to survive the high waters of a menacing sea. Cycled to Ezinge from Groningen railway station, just 17 km away. See more..
  25. 4.0 Magnuskerk Bellingwolde (1 review)
    - 16e eeuwse kerk met losse toren
Points of Interest & Landmarks • Architectural Buildings • Churches & Cathedrals
    Magnuskerk Bellingwolde image
Mooie kerk! See more..
  26. 4.0 Hervormde Kerk Den Ham (1 review)
    - Impressive Gothic style tower
Spent < 1 hour Historic Sites • Points of Interest & Landmarks • Churches & Cathedrals
Den Ham is a village with a population of just under 6000 people, but has an impressive church with tower. The church is from 1840. The Gothic style tower is much older, probably from the mid 1300s, restored in 1607. Note the plaquette with text: "Getrouw tot in den dood. 1940-1945 Voor hen die pal stonden." Loyal until death 1940 - 1945 For those who stood firm. Testament to the villagers who fought German occupation. See more..
