I was curious to hear the story of the unusual statue ,it was told to me by one of my Dutch relatives,during my last visit in Groningen. Any tourist is welcomed by the horse of uncle Loeks in front of the railway station ,why there ,I have no idea .The statue was created by an artist ,being a symbol of the local culture .Long time ago ,a farmer who had a stable in the area ,lost his racing horse ,that got sick and died .A legend says that the butcher came to take the horse ,you can imagine how upset was his master ,children or maybe his friends invented a silly song about uncle Luke's horse...I can imagine the protest of locals when they tried to remove the statue temporarily ,.. From 1996 design by world famous Rem Koolhaas; photo's by Erwin Olaf. A public toilet with both a male and a female section while the images depict the struggle between the two sexes. It very much reflects the thinking about human sexuality in the 1990s. Meanwhile third gender people or people who do not feel comfortable in either box are demanding attention and space. Outstanding and hard to understand why the municipality has opened a storage facility next to it, almost hiding the place from public view or even access. See more..

The Jacobuskerk from the 14th century is a medieval cross church with a separate bell tower ( it's from 16th century). The Arabesques patern around the north entrance of the church is nice to see. The red brick architecture is quite unique. It's just beautiful. See more..

this church was in the midst of the last battle to liberate the Netherlands. Many Canadian soldiers lost their life, they are remembered in the church. the church is one of the oldest in this area and dates back to the 11th century. See more..

Min of meer bij toeval kwamen wij bij het Rosarium in Winschoten.Deze plaats verdient echter meer om alleen bij toeval ontdekt te worden. Het gaat hier om een zeer uitgebreid rozenpark met 320 soorten rozen, die allemaal goed gedocumenteerd zijn. Het vrij uitgebreide park dat mooi is aangelegd herbergt verder een aantal aansprekende beelden. Voor kinderen en geliefden is er bovendien een mooie berceau, opgebouwd uit verscheiden soorten klimrozen.

Als je na een uurtje of langer alles gezien hebt kun je een drankje of een lunch gebruiken in het gezellige paviljoen, dat zich ook uitstekend bleek te lenen voor besloten partijen.
Kortom een interessante attractie om op te nemen in een verkenning van Oost Groningen of gewoon voor een leuk uitje op een mooie dag. See more..

Steeds weer een nieuw thema voor een expositie. Ankie Onnes is zeer creatief. Theo Onnes maakt prachtige schilderijen over o.a dieren, Schiermonnikoog,mensen enz. Een echte aanrader ga eens kijken bij deze gastvrije mensen!

Wat een mooie tuin, en een heerlijke theetuin! Ik kende het complex niet. Al is er van de borg weinig over, wat er wel is , is zeker de moeite waard. Heerlijke koffie en gebak bijvoorbeeld. en een prachtige gevarieerde verzameling bliende plamnten. de nieuwe kas was nog niet in werking maar ziet er van buiten al mooi uit.

Molen de Lelie from 1862 is an octagonal scaffolding. It's a grain mill that had been restored a couple times. After the restoration, the mill was put into operation by volunteer millers. It was not open when we were there. It's located next to the candle shop we're visited. See more..

This 13th century church used to be an abbeychurch. The Benedictine abbey was abolished in 1485 and ever since the church served the local Christian community. The rectangular building in Romano-Gothic style underwent thorough restoration in 1565. The small tower (dakruiter) was added in 1810 as the earlier free standing tower had been demolished. Remarkable is that while new houses have been built in the direct vicinity of the church a respectful gate-like opening was reserved in order to ensure access to the medieval church. See more..

Ja... hier kann man fast jedes Bild mit nach Hause nehmen. Für kleines Geld verleiht hier die Künstlerin ihre Bilder. Vom Atelier bis zum Keller ist alles mit herrlichen Bildern behangen. Gegenüber der Villa liegt ein kostenloser Parkplatz. Der Park lädt zu einem gemütlichen Spaziergang ein. See more..

13th Century church with detached tower standing solidly on an elevation in flat surroundings. The church is of a simple Roman style design. It is basically one hall. The tower is nearby and linked to a small house, where the sexton used to live and at some point served as a school. The elevation or 'wierd' is man made and used to protect the locals against floods. Just imagine for more than 700 years these buildings on the wierd have been there, testament of a proud past during which the people of Groningen struggled to survive the high waters of a menacing sea. Indrukwekkende kerk met losse toren, die op een kunstmatige verhoging (wierd, of terp) lijkt te staan. Op deze plek stond een 14e eeuwse kerk, die begin 16e eeuw in slechte staat was en werd afgebroken. Rond 1527 verrees de huidige kerk, in gotische bouwstijl. De oorspronkelijk katholieke kerk werd gewijd aan de Heilige Magnus, in de 3e eeuw bisschop van het Italiaanse Trani. In 1593, tijdens de Reformatie, ging de kerk over in protestantse handen. De vrijstaande kerktoren, die opvallend ver van de kerk staat, is van jongere datum. De onderbouw is vroeg 18e eeuw, pas begin 20e eeuw werd de toren opgehoogd. Begin 20e eeuw werd de kerk gerestaureerd. De kerk was oorspronkelijk wit gepleisterd. Deze laag werd verwijderd. Het exterieur van het schip laat een aantal vreemde rode vlakken zien, die duidelijk afsteken bij de baksteen. Wat die vlakken zijn, is onduidelijk, ze zijn pas zichtbaar geworden na het verwijderen van de pleisterlaag. Merkwaardig is dat het versmalde koor van veel jongere datum lijkt dan het schip. Het schijnt echter even oud te zijn, 16e eeuw. Rond het kerkje een begraafplaats met graven tot in de 18e eeuw. Kerk helaas gesloten. Ga zeker nog eens het interieur bekijken, want de 17e eeuwse preekstoel en het 19e eeuwse orgel schijnen bijzonder te zijn. Mooie kerk! See more..

Den Ham is a village with a population of just under 6000 people, but has an impressive church with tower. The church is from 1840. The Gothic style tower is much older, probably from the mid 1300s, restored in 1607. Note the plaquette with text: "Getrouw tot in den dood. 1940-1945 Voor hen die pal stonden." Loyal until death 1940 - 1945 For those who stood firm. Testament to the villagers who fought German occupation. See more..
