Green Carpet
Hortus Haren is one of the oldest and largest botanical gardens in the Netherlands. The Chinese garden is unique in Europe and is designed by a famous Chinese landscape architect. You can walk behind the waterfall and smell the great fragrances of the plants. The Laarman garden has many plants which are nominated in the endangered species lists and is part of the National Plant Collection. In the Celtic garden you can look for your birthday tree. Children can do a scavenger hunt or climb the rock garden. There are frequently exhibitions of paintings and sculptures. New are the Hondsrug garden (which is part of the UNESCO Park The Hondsrug) and the 4000m2 butterfly and bee's garden. During your visit you can have a lunch in the Grand Cafe The Plantage, the Hortus Café or the Chinese Teahouse and there is a very great gift and Plants shop. We have audiotours and an interesting Hortus Chat app to talk with the trees. There is so much more to see, so come and visit us! Hope to see you.

So much potential but it's not there
This botanical garden is honestly a bit of a bummer, there's so much potential for it but the potential isn't there. it's very large and spacious but there isn't a lot filling up space. It's also a but unkempt too.

Beautiful Chinese garden
The Hortus in Haren is always worth a visit. It's large enough for a good walk, but if you don't want to walk very far can choose to stay close to the entrance and just visit the beautiful Chinese garden. This garden was sponsored by the Chinese community in Groningen and it feels like a little piece of China. A rocky landscape with tunnel and a waterfall, bridges over a pond. a lush garden around the water and a true Chinese teahouse in a real authentic Chinese building. I love to drink a cup of jasmine tea here on a Sunday. The rest of the hortus is a compilation of landscapes with themes, even if you don't know much about plants it's still interesting. In the middle of the park you can find another place to sit down and have something to drink. The tropical greenhouse that used to be there is gone now. It was too expensive to maintain. I'm sure it will be replaced by another nice garden in the future.
