Sun Reiyn Ru Hmohom Pa Hengiym image
The place is all about Mor hom, one of Phrae's famous products. Here, you can make your own tie-dye Mor hom product (shirt, trouser, hat, handkerchief, scarf ; whatever you pick) and select a pattern from a picture book. We had a lot of fun dyeing our pieces into indigo blue (with many helps from staff). There are also various Mor hom products (such as readymade tie-dye shirt, soap) for sale. Highly recommend. 4. 4.5 Wat Phra That Cho Hae (129 reviews)
    - The #1 temple in Phrae.
    Speciality Museums
Wat Phra That Cho Hae image
The temple was crowded. It's a pity that we didn't see an outstanding golden pagoda of the tiger year (Thai zodiac), since it was under renovation. However, we walked 3 times in clockwise direction around the pagoda to pay our respects and worship Buddha relics (hair and left elbow) contained inside. See more..
  5. 4.5 Khum Chao Luang (56 reviews)
    - One of must visiting places in Phrae.
    Historic Sites
    Khum Chao Luang image
The 2 storey gingerbread style luxurious vintage building with gracefully light green engraved wooden doors, windows, and eaves was once a residence of the last lord of Phrae. The place was free entrance. It is undoubtedly a very good place to stroll around taking some photos, watching some antique furnitures, and learning history of Phrae. Highly recommend ! P.S. There's also an old dark dungeon which was used to imprison slaves (so creepy). See more..
  6. 4.5 Wat Pong Sunan (48 reviews)
    - Beautiful and very kind temple.
    Religious Sites
    Wat Pong Sunan image
The temple is located on Kham Lue road where the walking street "Kad Kong Kao" is held in every Saturday night. First, we didn't intend to visit the temple. However, the temple kindly allowed tourists in the night market to use their toilets for free (many thanks for your kindness), so we visited the temple (and, of course, made a donation). This ancient temple was renovated in 1929 under the support from the owners of Vongburi house. The temple is really gorgeous even in the night. Highlights of the temple include 108 spire white pagoda, giant golden tortoise statue, huge reclining Buddha, arch entrance with 19 spire golden pagoda, etc. The question was why did we forget to include such a beautiful temple in our itinerary in the first place. 7. 4.5 Wat Chom Sawan (45 reviews)
    - Elegant Burmese temple.

    Wat Chom Sawan image
This stunning dark red architecture with gorgeous cascading roofs is an over 100 year old Burmese style teak temple embellished with many Lanna flags and lanterns. After we had worshipped the principle Buddha image, we strolled around the beautiful temple. There are many nice spots to take photos. See more..
  8. 4.5 Phrathat Doi Leng (10 reviews)
    - "Aim" at Phrae city, as its name suggests.
    Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Phrathat Doi Leng image
The temple is on the top of the hill. We drove on a paved sloping (and narrow) path surrounded by a bunch of trees up the hill to the parking lots, then walked few steps up to the temple. The temple's main feature is a small white pagoda that contains Buddha relics lies in front of a beautiful Lanna style wooden hall. Behind the hall, there is a viewpoint where we enjoyed a panoramic view of Phrae city and surrounding green hills. Recommend. See more..

Free Thai Movement Phrae Museum image
We were part of a larger group to tour this enlightening Museum. Found out Wild Bill Donovan of the OSS the precursor to the CIA helped to form a Thai Underground. The owner leader of the museum was very informative and you can tell he is dedicated to keeping the story alive. See more..

  11. 4.0 Phae Mueang Phi Forest Park (70 reviews)
    - Interesting geological site.
Thursday: 7:00 AM - 6:00 PM Geologic Formations
Phae Mueang Phi Forest Park image
The place appears in Phrae's provincial slogan. Hence, it should be assumed that this is one of the must visiting places in Phrae. The site was free entrance. By walking about 150 m from the parking lot, ones will finally reach the place. The orange-brown region is full of many strange rock formations (mushroom/anthill ; depend on your imagination) which were caused by eroded dirt and sandstone over 2 million years ago. Visitors may walk to the viewpoint to see a panoramic view of the site and the surrounding green forest. Many nice spots to take photos. However, we recommend you to visit the place in the morning to avoid heat of the midday and don't forget to apply sunblock lotion. See more..

  13. 4.0 Phae Mueang Phi (46 reviews)
    - Erosion
    Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Phae Mueang Phi image
In simple terms: Time has eroded soft sand and left hard sand standing as pillars. It’s similar to what can be seen in Chiang Mai, Sa Kaeo, and Ratchaburi but access is relatively speaking easier. When we were there, school classes were taken on guided tours where park rangers explained about geology and dinosaurs (I assume to keep the attention at peak). A nice but not overwhelming destination. See more..
  14. 4.0 Ban Thung Hong (34 reviews)
    - Mor Hom market.
    Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Ban Thung Hong image
Along this road, there are many shops selling every kinds of the best quality genuine Mor Hom dresses at cheap price. Here, we enjoyed shopping and bought several shirts. Mor Hom is a famous deep blue dye (which is extracted from the local plant called "Hom" ; do not confuse this with the indigo plant), fabric that is a symbol of Phrae. If you like a stylish local shirt, this place is highly recommended. See more..
  15. 4.0 Wat Luang (29 reviews)
    - Presumably the first temple in Phrae.
    Architectural Buildings
    Wat Luang image
The temple is probably the first temple in Phrae. The construction of the temple occured simultaneously with the establishment of the ancient city "Phon Nakhon" (which is nowadays Phrae) around 1200 years ago. The old brick wall at the entrance made us feel like we were entering into the ancient kingdom. We worshipped "Phra Chao Saen Luang", 1200 year old sitting Buddha which was once a principal Buddha image of Phon Nakhon. Then, we walked to the ancient brick structure (ruin) with arch entrance to worship "Phaya Phon", the first lord and the founder of Phon Nakhon. The temple also has a museum which collects many antique artifacts. The temple is highly recommended for ones who enjoy watching Lanna architecture and ancient sites. See more..
  16. 4.0 Wat Phra That Chom Chaeng (28 reviews)
    - Gorgeous ancient temple.
    Architectural Buildings
Wat Phra That Chom Chaeng image
After we had visited the famous Wat Phra That Cho Hae whose pagoda was under renovation, our guide decided to take us to this temple instead (about 2 km from Wat Phra That Cho Hae). The approximately 1200 year old Lanna style temple was super tranquil. We were the only group in the temple! Highlights of the temple include the golden pagoda containing Buddha relics (hair and left hand), the big standing Buddha in front of the pagoda, the huge reclining Buddha, the ancient arch door. See more..
  17. 4.0 Wat Phra Bat Ming Mueang Worawiharn (26 reviews)
    - Significant temple of Phrae

Wat Phra Bat Ming Mueang Worawiharn image
Located right in the heart of the city, the temple is a merge of 2 ancient temples, Phrabat temple and Ming Mueang temple, which belonged to the former Phrae royal family. Highlights of this Lanna temple include the principle Buddha of Phrae called "Phrabuddha Kosai", an old golden pagoda called "Phra Chedi Ming Mueang", a replica of the Buddha's footprint, the gorgeous teak pavilion, and the 150 year old hand embroidered Lanna scriptures by Mae Chao Bua Lai (the last queen of Phrae). The place also contains the building in memory of "Jacob", the deceased famous writer who was a direct descendant of the last lord of Phrae. Moreover, there is a novice school inside this temple. Truly beneficial. See more..

    - Fascinating Small Museum

Free Thai (Seri Thai) Museum image
This is a fascinating small museum. To get the key go to the reception at the Paradon Hotel. Manly through boards and photographs it tells the story of the Free Thai movement during WW2 and their resistance to the Japanese. The story is told that when the Thai government agreed to let the Japanese occupy their country they would declare war on Britain and USA. The war declaration was delivered to the British but the Thai ambassador in Washington refused to deliver it so the US and Thailand were never at war. At the end of the war See more..

    - Tranquil Buddha park on the top of the mountain
    Spent 1-2 hours Religious Sites
Wat Phra That In Khaen Temple image
Deep in the green mountainous zone of Phrae with around 30 minute driving from the city, there is a serene Buddha park hidden on the mountain. After parking a vehicle, ones have to climb up the stairs to visit an imitation of sacred places in Myanmar like Kyaiktiyo Pagoda (also known as “The Golden Rock” ; the rock looks like it is balanced on a ridge, about to fall down at any moment) and the famous Shwedagon Pagoda. The place also contains several Buddha images including "Phra pud" (the upper half of a large golden Buddha statue which seems to emerge from the ground) and Lanna style jade Buddha. Moreover, from the Golden Rock plateau, you will see an epic panoramic view of abundant forest and green mountains. See more..
  22. 4.0 City Pillar Shrine (8 reviews)
    - Phrae's city pillar.
    Points of Interest & Landmarks
    City Pillar Shrine image
Located right in the centre of Phrae city, the Lanna style pavilion contains a golden city pillar made of "Yomhin wood" (Phrae's provincial tree), plus an ancient stone inscription which is a former zero milestone of Phrae city. Also, in front of the shrine, there are 2 guardian giants which are supposed to keep watch over the place. However, one of them is sleeping, while the other is distracted by something in the distance which is a reflection of the calm and peaceful town of Phrae. The meaning is clearly that in Phrae there are no threats that require the vigilance of the giants. This was our first stop of the day, since it is (Thai) customary to pay respect to the town before entering the town. See more..

Check it out yourself ! See more..

    - Lovely Place
    Architectural Buildings
    Pratubjai House image
We visited only one of the so called Teak Houses in Phrae and were very glad it was this one. The building is very attractive and much of it is open. There is a description of the story behind the house given as a pamphlet at the ticket office and is available in multiple languages. There are too many artifacts to see although not all are obvious as to what they are. The staff could not have been friendlier and offered us a range of sweets to sample. Yes they were on sale but we were not pressured to buy them. See more..
