Tey Lassada. Professional Tour guide and driver image
Spent 2.5 days with Tey covering Plains of Jars site 1, 2 and 3, spoon village, ancient kingdom and a drive from Phonsavan to Luang Prabang. The road to Luang Prabang is long and windy. Tey will drive carefully and make stops at nice view point to ensure we have an enjoyable and comfortable ride. He speaks good English, has very good knowledge of Laos history and is kind too. When he discovered my husband's cap was left in his car, he immediately drove to our accommodation in Luang Prabang to pass us the cap. Highly recommend his services. See more..

Quality of Life Association Uxo Survivor Information Centre & Village Shop image
We are English students at Lone Buffalo school in Phonsavan. We visited with our teachers. It was the first time for any of us to visit. It's a very good idea to visit. Beautiful things to buy and look at like the Tree of Life, but expensive scarves etc for Lao people. However we know that some of the money goes back to the villages so we hope visitors buy lots of things to help the families. This support is very important for UXO survivors. We are happy to have been there. It is a good place to find out what happened to people in Xieng Khouang, our province. You should visit and spend some money to help QLA and the families. See more..
  5. 4.5 Uxo Lao (72 reviews)
    - As important as a visit to the Jars
    Government Buildings
    Uxo Lao image
Before we arrived in Laos we had no idea how bad the war was for this country. In Luang Prabang or Vientiane you will hear about it, but the visit to the area of Phonsavan makes history come alive. Don´t expect a flashy visitor center, it is basic with pictures and some exhibits, but they show an excellent english 1 hour movie that gave us very comprehensive explanations of what happened during the war and what is done today. I think the last movie runs at 18.30. We drove from Luang Prabang leaving early in the morning at 6.30 with a private car and were able to visit all 3 sites of the Jars with enough time to stroll around and still see the movie in the evening. By no means is this a happy visit, but it gave us a lot to think about. See more..

Eric was knowledgeable, friendly and professional, as he had been since my first enquirey. I really appreciated having a tour that addressed my interests and being able to appreciate the calm and beauty of the jars without lots of people around. Highly recommended. See more..

Hello, Some details for independent travelers: The market is situated 24 kilometers from Phonsavan's tourism strip in the village of Nong Pet. You'll find it on the south side of highway 7, 250 meters east of the Van Cha Leun Guest House. That guest house is perfectly fine for a nights sleep for anyone interested in visiting the market early as it starts well before sunrise and is winding down by around 08:00 AM. For folks who are interested in local markets, this is a good one. I only saw two other tourists during my recent visit. See more..
  10. 4.5 Xieng Khouang Provincial Museum (3 reviews)
    - Very impressed
Sunday: 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM History Museums
    Xieng Khouang Provincial Museum image
I was so impressed by the quality of this museum. Laos does not always put its full efforts into museums....to say the least. This one is a happy exception. There are at least two floors of high quality expository information about Xieng Khouang, the Plain of Jars, and their history from prehistoric times all the way to today. There's also a small theater with well-done films on these subjects. There's also a good amount of space devoted to representing the various ethnic groups of Xieng Khouang, which is a nice celebration of Laos' wondrous diversity. The information is well composed and cited, and I came away having learned a lot. The museum is not too big or overwhelming, so I vote it an excellent use of a couple of hours! See more..

Xieng Khouang Phonsavan Official Tourist Information Center image
I had booked an excellent personal (motor)tour with Mr. VONGSAVATH DIUANGDARA [[email protected]], Diuangsaichy Travel, (guided by fluent English speaker LIEN) and our first stop was at this rather prominent building. Even though it was initially locked up, the real attraction for me was the easily accessible backside, with an array of some of the various armaments used during the “Secret War”/Second Indochina War. Whilst the weapons of are merely gruesome tools in an extremely ugly aspect of Humanity vs. Humanity, I continue to be mystified-and horrified—by what we do to each other. Anyway, once open, I was able to peruse the severely limited content, signing in and picking up a couple of fliers regarding the area. It was a pretty good introduction to what I was about to experience. See more..

If you are in the area to visit the Plain of Jars, do factor in time (another half day or so) to visit the old provincial capital of Muang Khoun. Bombed into oblivion by U.S. forces, there are some interesting artefacts left behind, including this temple (what's left of it) and the Buddha statue. The history is engaging! See more..

Amazing experience! Sakhone is such a patient, flexible, knowledgeable, and fun tour guide. We did plain of jars site one, stopped for some really good pour over coffee in town, spent a lot of time swimming in a truly stunning hot spring resort with delicious lunch, and ended the day in a weaving village. We were nervous to do such a big trip with the kids, but everybody had a blast. The kids got to try their hand at weaving, as well as pick a bunch of star fruit and eat them right off the tree. Wonderful memories were made that we will never forget! See more..

    Nong Tang Lake image
The little town of Nong Tang (also known as Muang Sui) is located about 48 kms from Phonsavan on Route 7. In the middle of town is a scenic lake with limestone outcrops in the background. It is a natural beauty spot and there are a couple of basic restaurants where you can enjoy a bowl of noodle soup while looking out at the lake. This can make a relaxed and pleasant day trip from Phonsavan. While in the area, you can also see the nearby ancient Buddha Cave and the 15th century Wat Ban Phong- both of which are within 3kms of the lake. See more..

    - Beautiful Historical Temple

    Wat Ban Phong image
Like most other monuments in Xieng Khouang Province, this one has seen a fair bit of damage from aerial bombing in the war but a beautiful chedi (stupa) still stands in this rustic village, which hints at the former glory of the area. Said to date back to the 15th century, it is slender, elegant Lao style chedi, but even more tapered than normal. The upper half of the chedi is covered with beautiful stucco designs, which are so rich they suggest that this temple had a wealthy or powerful local patron. The nearby wat is more ruined, but the base of the main vihaan (hall) is still original with a very elegant design, The brickwork is badly damaged in parts but again the stucco decoration is lovely and shows real craftmanship. The roof and body of the temple are modern replacements, Hopefully, money will be found to restore the original woodwork roof and pillars eventually, It is a rare surviving example of Xieng Khouang architecture. There are still monks on the grounds of the wat in wooden buildings, Come here in conjunction with nearby Tham Pha. See more..
