The 2 days bicycling tour with a homestay was one of our first experiences in Laos – and it will be difficult to exceed! Somtaek, the owner of Marvelaos, is a great guide and so friendly, helpful and thoughtful. My husband and I really enjoyed biking with Somtaek through the Savannakhet surroundings (eventhough many of the roads are in a real poor condition!) and we had some great conversations with this clever guy. The homestay with a Lao family in a village was a very special experience and not anything that you can experience without a guide who speaks the language. Somtaek will do everything to make you feel comfortable, he even lent us the bikes the day before the tour started (for free) so we could easily get around as we stayed 1.5 km from the center of Savannakhet. If you are in Savannakhet I recommend that you go on one of Marvelaos' tours. I am sure that you will not regret it! Thank you for a great experience, Somtaek – khobchai ;-) See more..

Bodies of Water
We cycled here (rented bikes from ‘The Bored Room’ in Savannakhet) and it was really beautiful. We were the only tourists there and it was very peaceful! About 8km cycle which is reasonable, roads are okay, quiet once out of town, not too bumpy. From here we cycled a further 8km to That Ing Hang, and then came back around in a loop! An enjoyable few hours in the countryside!! See more..

Lovely people, good food (with a bit of searching for vegetarians too) and just a pleasant feel. See more..

The good bits Cycling off road through the forest Great views, countryside, lake Local guide showing us which branch to cut and drink water Lunch on the forest floor (carpeted with leaves cut by local guide) Dropped off at my hotel afterwards Funny and friendly guides Not so good Finishing cycling and waiting for an hour until lunchtime. Could have cycled more. More explanation of the plants, trees etc. Would have been nice to visit the village. Feedback given as i knew this was a trial. But too expensive for what i got. 190,000kip. But still good fun!! See more..
- 3.5 Heuan Hinh (Stone House) (7 reviews)
-Worth the effort!
Points of Interest & Landmarks
I went to see the Stone House on my bike ride from Savannakhet to Pakse. Just south of Savannakhet are two to be visited places: That Phonh and Stone House That Ponh is a temple complex, important to the locals. It's nice enough on the way to the Stone House which was a northern outpost of the Khmer Empire. One temple still stands which is partly in ruins. Yet, the artwork is still partly visible and it shows that this once was a magnificent outpost. Ships must have been attracted to the temple where they probably had to pay fees to enter the empire. The temple is still in use. Inside you can see the main Buddha statue where people still pray. There is an annual festival held in the full moon night in April. Getting there is a little tricky. You can do it in a tour you can organise with the Tourist Office in Savannakhet. Another option is to get a motorbike. I did it on my own bicycle, which was quite easy. See more..
