  1. 5.0 Tad Xai Waterfall (1 review)
    - Amazing
    Waterfalls
Excellent waterfall Tad Xay and Pha Xay (‘Tad’ and ‘Pha’ respectively mean ‘waterfall’ and ‘cliff’) may arguably be the most beautiful ‘twin’ waterfall in Phou Khao Khouay, particularly during the rainy season. The Houey Xay stream has its source in the northern mountains of the park, meanders through dense and relatively untouched evergreen forest and empties finally into the Nam Mang. By reaching Tad Xay, its crystal clear waters are cascading over seven 1- to 3-meter steps. The water then flows through a picturesque valley for about 800 meters before plunging over another steep 40-meter cliff (Pha Xay). It falls into a breathtaking gorge surrounded by dense forest. The amount of water varies considerably with the seasons: being calm and gentle during the months of December to May, the river may turn into a wild and torrent thus dangerous river for the rest of the year. 2. 5.0 Cool Pool and Ban Napavan (1 review)
    - Amazing! Thakhek Loop.
    Bodies of Water
Cool Pool and Ban Napavan image
Nestled below the foothills of limestone karsts, narrow rays of sunlight escaping the trap of nearby trees shimmer in the turquoise ripples. It’s not just a Cool Pool. It’s an M&S Cool Pool (fellow Brits will understand this reference). Mouth-watering descriptions aside, it really is a beautiful, calm and tranquil place below limestone mountains. If you’re on the Thakhek Loop I thoroughly recommend using this to get respite from the heat. The scenery on the dirt road leading up to the Cool Pool is amazing! Wide, open fields with misty mountains in the background. I jumped in with my clothes on and the wet clothes helped keep me cool on the motorbike until they dried. Lots of locals use this for swimming and a few asked me for a photo and then kindly offered me a beer! There was some rubbish strewn about the floor however there is a rubbish bin and the workers tend to keep it clean as best they can. Loved swimming in here! See more..

  5. 4.5 Dragon Cave (2 reviews)
    - A Strange, Eerie Cave
    Caverns & Caves
    Dragon Cave image
Enter through a small opening and down a set of concrete steps into a long, narrow cavern with a river to your right. Being in here alone, no other people in there, as a solo traveller, was quite creepy. Once you’re through the narrow cavern you’re greeted with a very low ceiling which you have to bend down to go through to the other side - reminding me of an Indiana Jones Movie or the Tomb Raider Games. Get past the low-ceiling and the cave opens up into a huge cavern. Neon lights bring out the caves distinctive features and bats fly near the high ceiling shrieking and darting into the dark abyss. Great experience! See more..
