  5. 4.5 Kong Lor Cave (352 reviews)
    - Not difficult to reach the cave
    Saturday: 8:00 AM - 4:00 PM Caverns & Caves
    Kong Lor Cave image
We visited Tham Kong Lo from Vientiane: Hired a tuktuk in to the south bus station (cost us 50.000 kip, but I guess we didn't negotiate hard enough (an alternative would be a bus from morning market bus station, but am not sure if it starts before 6 am). At south bus station we got on the bus to Lak Sao (three departures at 5, 6 nf 7am), ours was the 6am bus which left Vientiane at 6.45 (loading of stuff, smoking, getting fuel, being Laotian.). The road was nice and we hopped of ath Ban Khoun Kham (aka Ban Na Hin) which was 12:15. Checked into a guesthouse, spoke to the owner and got his advice to visit the cave next day. OK, got a lunch and checked out the taxi-sttion in the middle of the town. It has a schedule of tuktuks to the cave (approx 40 km away on a nice road), they go at 10 am, 1 pm and 15:30 pm, so we could esily caught the 1pm, if we knew better (the cave boats operate until 5pm, so enough time for the cave, which takes 2.5h). Next day we arranged a tuktuk to pick us up at the guesthouse but that didnt happen because the owner forgot to call them (a trick to stay another night maybe). So we rented a motorbik from a GH on the main road, near the gas station and drove to the cave (1h, a nice drive). There is a sawng-thaew, going to the junction (30-50 km) on the main road Vientiane - Thakaek. at 5pm. We took it and then waited on the beforementioned main road for 15mins and caught a bus to Pakse (arrived 5am on the following day). Allinall, the cave could (if youre in a rush and have luck with public transport) be done without overnight (sleep on the bus to Pakse. Easy. If umiss something, there are guesthouses around and busses Vientiane - Thakek are frequent In Thakaek you can catch an onward bus to Pakse, which run up to midnight (in Thakaek) See more..
  6. 4.5 Mixay Motorbike Rental (12 reviews)
    - Perhaps the best motorbike rental shop in Thakhek
    Gear Rentals
    Mixay Motorbike Rental image
There are plenty of motorbike rental shops in Thakhek but Mixay seems to be the best one. The motorbikes are in good conditions, the price is 100 000 Kip / day (standard price) and the owner is really helpful and patient (just the opposite of Mad Monkey, another rental shop in Thakhek). 7. 4.5 Xang Cave (2 reviews)
    - First Cave on The Thakhek Loop
    Caverns & Caves
    Xang Cave image
This is the very first cave on the Thakhek Loop. It’s a small cave, with lots of statues of buddhas. Good for a quick stop off but there are far better caves further up the loop including: Xieng Liab Cave (swim here) and Kong Lor Cave (take a 2 hour boat ride through the cave). There is a family at the main entrance who will sell you your ticket. There’s a young boy who is very angry for some reason! Picture included. See more..
  8. 4.0 Tham Nang Aen Cave (35 reviews)
    - do the boat trip!!
Spent 1-2 hours Caverns & Caves
    Tham Nang Aen Cave image
Entree fee was a bit steep at 30.000 KIP. Wouldn’t say it’s really worth it, cave isn’t that big (it is nice though). However, you can book a boat trip at the ticket office in front of the cave for 20.000 KIP per person. This is ABSOLUTELY worth every single KIP. Not only the boat trip is very nice, the part of cave where you are brought to (not reachable in any other way) is very beautiful. The boat man guided us around, showed interesting spots and let us drink water from the holy well (“holy”... for us it was just mountain water ;)). See more..
  9. 4.0 Green Discovery Laos (16 reviews)
    - Experience of a lifetime!

    Green Discovery Laos image
We kayaked through Xe bang fei cave with Green discovery tours. Our guide Tik and his assistant Super were fabulous- friendly, helpful, informative and interesting. The trip itself is fantastic! The cave is enormous and beautiful; the scenery spectacular. Our homestay for 2 nights in Ban Nong Ping village was also a highlight. Such a privilege to share some time in the lives of the local people. The food was great too. All round the best experience!! We usually prefer independent travel but would highly recommend Green discovery tours to anyone. See more..
  10. 4.0 Tha Falang Lake (16 reviews)

    Tha Falang Lake image
It was sublime! It was a few KM outside Thakhek. Good little trip seeing the mountains and many awesome pictures to take. The road into it is getting finished slowly.. On arrival the place looked great. Took pictures everywhere... The food was good. We ordered local dishes. It was a nice swim with the family. See more..
  11. 4.0 Thakhek Loop (8 reviews)
    - My highlight in Laos
    Motorcycle Trails
    Thakhek Loop image
The Thakhek Loop is an amazing experience that you really need to do if you are in Laos. I rented a scooter in Thakhek and made the loop in 3 days. From my point of view, this was enough time but other people usually do it in 4 days. During the loop, you’ll see a lot of beautiful landscapes (and different!), you’ll cross many local villages (the real Laos!) and you’ll meet a lot of nice people. The Konglor Cave which is the highlight of the loop is listed as UNESCO World Heritage and is absolutely beautiful and astonishing (the cave in the pictures is not the Konglor Cave but the Dragon Cave, still incredibly beautiful). Don’t miss that if you’re travelling to Laos ;) See more..

  13. 4.0 Xieng Liab Cave (2 reviews)
    - Epic for Swimming
    Caverns & Caves
    Xieng Liab Cave image
Firstly, the best thing about my experience with this cave was the swimming. In 42C heat, it was very nice jumping into the cool water and swimming around for an hour or so. I was lucky that, when I arrived, there were no other tourists around so I had the place to myself. You can walk around the water and go to the back of the cave where you will see a large cavern. There were signs attached to the trees in the carpark saying 5,000 Kip to park your bike but there was no one there taking any payment. See more..
  14. 3.5 Tham Pa Fa (Buddha Cave) (54 reviews)
    - Historic Buddhist Caves
Spent < 1 hour Points of Interest & Landmarks
Tham Pa Fa (Buddha Cave) image
Tham Pha is a peaceful cave which is located about 3 kms from the village of Nong Tang, which is also known as Muang Sui. It is about 50 kms from Phonsavan, the provincial capital along a sealed road. Set in an attractive area of forest and limestone peaks, it will appeal to both natural and history lovers. The main attraction inside is a huge seated Buddha, which is alleged to be up to 1200 years old. It is in very good condition, so I suggest it has been restored many times or is not as oid as is claimed. There is also a maze of well-lit tunnels for visitors to explore, which contains some lovely limestone formations, antique Buddha statues and occasional wall paintings. Entrance costs a reasonable 10,000 kip. See more..
  15. 3.5 Mad Monkey Motorbike (54 reviews)

    Mad Monkey Motorbike image
We rented 2 motorbikes at Mad Monkey to do the Thakhek loop He was super friendly and gave all necessary information regarding the loop. We also received a lot of tips for our trip Motorbikes are in perfect condition, the best we had so far during our trip in Laos. We could leave our backpack at his place during our trip See more..

Confirmed when we drove up last week. Big signs at the main road and double confirmed by guards posting the entry further down the road. But confirmed by my parents who visited earlier, that it’s really really nice. ( but of course in the same category as other sites in the area ) photo taken on the way See more..
