Nong Tang Lake, Xiangkhouang Province, Laos

Scenic Lake in a Karst Landscape

The little town of Nong Tang (also known as Muang Sui) is located about 48 kms from Phonsavan on Route 7. In the middle of town is a scenic lake with limestone outcrops in the background. It is a natural beauty spot and there are a couple of basic restaurants where you can enjoy a bowl of noodle soup while looking out at the lake. This can make a relaxed and pleasant day trip from Phonsavan. While in the area, you can also see the nearby ancient Buddha Cave and the 15th century Wat Ban Phong- both of which are within 3kms of the lake.

    Ordinary ...
We took a road trip from Luang Prabang to Phonsavan and passing by this lake for a short stop over, through Asia Top Travel agency. Our tour guide told us the local legend about this lake where underneath this lake was a village which is now submerged under the lake water. The reason was because that a villager refused to listen to the advice not to hunt the sacred deer. Hence, there was a huge storm which eventually flood the entire village and formed a lake. Other than the legend, it is an ordinary lake without much scenery along the lake side. Having said that, the mountainous road trip from Luang Prabang to Phonsavan provides plenty of opportunity for scenic mountainous views.
