- 2.0 Virgin Mary Church (1 review)
-Strange but modest architecture, usually not open to visits.
Spent < 1 hour Points of Interest & Landmarks • Architectural Buildings • Churches & Cathedrals
During our guided walking tour in the center of Ardabil we came across this strange, small domed church, which overlooks a tiny square along a street with little traffic. The square is rather ugly, a pure asphalt stretch, and the only element of interest is the church. But we already knew that it's closed and it can not be visited. We are told that it, since long time deconsecrated, is open just for cultural events. And, if I understand correctly, even for those typically Iranian performances, between bodybuilders and religious, which are called "Zurkhaneh", ie "House of strenght". We knew that it's an Armenian church; but having seen some splendid masterpieces of this architecture three years ago in Armenia itself, it certainly didn't impress us. Later I discovered that the church is modern: its construction dates back just to 1876. So, the main reason for the interest of this former church is, in my opinion, in its documentary value, regarding the ancient presence of an Armenian community also in Ardabil. In conclusion, consider this building only if you pass through the area (or if you are lucky enough to find it open for some cultural event), otherwise let it go. See more..
