Our hike with Raylin was easily one of my favorite activities I completed during my week in Barahona. The hike started with some fresh fruit, right from a tree, and continued up a mountain to a beautiful overlook - surreal, honestly. We made our way back down, walking through a river, over rocks and swinging on vines... An experience you wouldn't be able to get much of anywhere else. Truly incredible. Raylin is so knowledgeable. I spent four to five days with Guanaventuras - a local cooperative based in beautiful La Cienaga, in Barahona province. They offer affordable tours–in areas they know super well because the guides grew up in this region, including the well known sites (larimar mines, caves, etc). They also offer homestays (with a room and en suite bath), and take you into their community. There's no better way to immerse! I used Ecotour Barahona for transfers from Santo Domingo to Barahona and from Barahona to Punta Cana; both of these were perfectly organised by Nico and the drivers were excellent. In Barahona I made two tours (Laguna de Oviedo and Bahia de las Aguilas as well as tour of Lago Enriquillo). Both of the tours were wonderful - Bahia de las Aguilas is certainly one of the most beautiful beaches I have ever seen and Lago Enriquillo is very special and something you may not expect to see when you think of Dom. Republic. We also had a very good driver and Jasmine, the tour guide, had a wonderful personality and made the tours very pleasant. I can highly recommend Ecotour and would certainly use them again if visiting the SW of Dom. Republic again - it is a beautiful part of the country. See more..

Lovely place ,nice nature ,clean . Not suitable for children unless they swim on the lake : Waves for surfing :-) But a lovely natural lake which you can hunk on it . We are doing all the island with a motorbike plenty of time like 6 months . See more..

Paradise on earth is what you got on San Rafael. The beach is way too beautiful, you must see with your own eyes. There's a river that came from the mountains to the beach as cascades to pools created by man. The water is really clean and cold, also you can see fishes on the water.. really cool! This is a fabulous place to swim, and one of the few places you can safely do so on this stretch of coast. The beach shelves gently, and then does a sudden drop, so watch out for that. There is a reef just offshore, with fish, but the visibility was poor on the day we visited. There is a cafe, and a shower, so good amenities for a good afternoon out. See more..

First of all, I am experienced in visiting mining locales around the world so this is no big surprise for me. However, most people would find the road to the mine difficult, scary and possibly impossible. Fortunately, we were in the care of experienced guides but even so, recent torrential rains made the road more difficult than usual. Many parts of the road were destroyed. This is the only place in the world where Larimar is mined and that makes this special. Mining, for the most part, is by hand. Tons of Basalt must be removed to find a few pounds of the gem. I would not recommend this for a casual tourist, but if you are into rocks, gems, and minerals, it is worth the effort. You will not be able to make this trip on your own. You will need to go with someone who knows the road and has a vehicle that can do the job. See more..
