  11. 4.5 Monumento a los Heroes de la Restauracion (505 reviews)
    - Beautiful monument to DR independence
    Monuments & Statues
Monumento a los Heroes de la Restauracion image
DR had a very turbulent history - it was switched between the Spanish and Haitian rule, and had to fight for its independence several times. This imposing monument stands proudly in the second biggest DR city. It is dedicated to victims of the Restauration war against Spain which was fought 1863-65 after Spain regained DR shortly after its first independence from Haiti. Entering the ground floor is free, while there's a couple of dollars fee to climb up. The elevator did not work, but it is a very mild climb via spiral staircase through several levels and on each is a museum, diorama and some info on that war. Once on top there're great views of entire city. See more..

We are in Santo Domingo visiting the Zone Colonial area. Juan Pablo Duarte y Díez (January 26, 1813 – July 15, 1876)[1] was a Dominican military leader, writer, activist, and nationalist politician who was the foremost of the founding fathers of the Dominican Republic and bears the title of Father of the Nation. As one of the most celebrated figures in Dominican history, Duarte is considered a national hero and revolutionary visionary in the modern Dominican Republic, who along with military general Ramón Matías Mella and Francisco del Rosario Sánchez, organized and promoted La Trinitaria, a secret society that eventually led to the Dominican revolt and independence from Haitian rule in 1844 and the start of the Dominican War of Independence. With nice morning weather, we took a walking tour beginning uphill at the imposing white 243' Monumento a los Héroes de la Restauración, then down to Plaza Duarte's 1894 Cathedral, Moorish Palace and Palacio Consistorial, then finally up to this pleasant 19th C Fortress. Being a working fort, we asked permission passing through the guarded entry gate(noteworthy collection of provincial coat of arms). Inside is a peaceful area with a 2004 Museum(learned of US Marine occupation after WWII), Military Hospital, collection of assorted historic armaments, and interesting iron sculptures. All very interesting. Just below the fort is a nice river valley view with red bridge. See more..
