  2. 4.5 Basilica Cathedral of Santa Maria la Menor (3.212 reviews)
    - Catedral Primada
    Thursday: 8:00 AM - 6:00 PM Churches & Cathedrals
Basilica Cathedral of Santa Maria la Menor image
Among many "first things" in SD, this Basilica is the most important one imo. In Spanish they call it simply the First Cathedral (Catedral Primada), as it was the first Catholic breakthrough in the Americas. Today it celebrates more than 500 years on American continent. The Basilica is located on the southern side of the Columbus park, behind Columbus back, and shines intact in its beauty. Interiors are very nice, including the altar and many side chapels. The only reason I deduct one star is because they charge entry. Place of worship should be free for everyone. See more..

Had a blast walking around the old buildings and the museum that tells you all about Colon. Grounds and street are clean and feels safe to be. Restaurants are very good and we had lunch at Nadan where all type of food is served. Recommend renting a bike for an hour and cycle around freely; it only costs around RD$ 300 per hour per bike. A square with many names, "Plaza de España", "Plaza de España de Santo Domingo", "Plaza de Armas", "Plaza Mayor" or "Plaza de la Hispanidad"! It is located at "Calle de las Atarazanas" (the ancient shipyards street), not far from the famous "Calle de las Damas", and surrounded by restaurants, small cafés and bars. At one of its sides, the "Alcázar de Colón", the residential palace built by Viceroy Don Diego de Colón (elder son of Christopher Columbus) and his wife, Dona María de Toledo (a great niece of King Ferdinand I of Aragon).
