We had a wonderful experience in discovering the rural Cambodia, something totally different then the regular touristic trip and on top of that we received a warm welcome and felt at home straight away, the food is copious and soooo tasty!... this Franco/Khmer couple is exactly what Kampong Thom needed in terms of regional promotion. Many thanks to Kunthy & Rico for everything. See more..

  3. 5.0 Prasat Kuha Nokor (4 reviews)
    - Much better than we expected
    Spent 1-2 hours Religious Sites
    Prasat Kuha Nokor image
This is a relatively small site but one with well-trimmed gardens in among the towers which are quite well restored. The ruins are interesting and good for photography. There is an entry fee despite an earlier reviewer managing to avoid the collector who wanders round the site. We were invited into the nearby school (buy some books and pencils at the shop!) and it was a great experience to meet the children in class. See more..
  4. 4.5 Sambor Prei Kuk (165 reviews)
    - Well worth a visit
    Ancient Ruins
    Sambor Prei Kuk image
We visited as a group and hired a local tour guide who was very knowledgeable and friendly. The temples are really spaced out - make sure to wear comfy shoes and mosquito repellent. I recommend having a driver meet you at the end of each temple. They were gorgeous temples that are currently undergoing conservation. Highly recommend. See more..
  5. 4.5 Sambo Preykuk Temples (144 reviews)
    - These temples were built during the reign of King Isanavarman I (AD 616- 635)

    Sambo Preykuk Temples image
The visit fires your imagination as you visit the various temples. You can image how the inhabitents lived their lives at worship. The lintel, pillars and the door frames are all made of sandstone. So far, 140 temples have been discovered in the forest. See more..
  6. 4.5 Stung Sen River (6 reviews)
    - Very pleasant countryside walk or bike ride
    Bodies of Water
    Stung Sen River image
You can go follow roads quite a long way either east or west along the river out of the centre of Kampong Thom city, although the best access to the river bank is going west - initially on the north side, past the market; but beyond the new bridge (at the western edge of town, about 2 km or so from the now rather delapidated original bridge in the centre), there are paths on either bank. It makes for a pleasant half-day excursion, a lovely glimpse of the Cambodian countryside: lots of fishing villages, glowing green ride paddies and so on - and you might not see another foreigner for hours, which is a rare treat. However, even basic little shops run out of someone's house are few and far between, so you need to take plenty of water with you. See more..

    Daem Chrei Temple image
Vicino all’Asram Eisei c’è un altro tempio interessante. È il Daem Chrei, piccolo tempio in mattoni senza grande decorazione ma incredibilmente suggestivo perché è completamente avvolto dalle ramificate radici di un albero che gli è cresciuto sopra. See more..
  15. 3.5 Old Colonial Governers Mansion and Bat Colony (23 reviews)
    - Riverside bat colony
Spent < 1 hour Points of Interest & Landmarks
Old Colonial Governers Mansion and Bat Colony image
The bat colony is not far from Kampong Thom center. Basically you go north along the main road and turn left on the street just before the river. Follow the river for about 300m and there should be a fairly large covered resting area on the riverside and the colonial governors mansion is on the street to your left. The mansion itself seems to be abandoned and the gates were locked. The trees outside the mansion are huge and difficult to miss. The sight of a colony of bats flying off to feed at sunset is something definitely worth seeing. It is also interesting to see the colony resting during the day, cooling themselves with the occasional wing beat. An important tip is that although the bats are sleeping, it does not mean that they are metabolically inactive. Umbrellas are strong recommended. See more..
