    Machanents Tourism And Art image
This museum is fairly new so it was a little difficult to find. Upon our arrival, we stopped into the souvenir section of the location and got a little back story of what they do there (we had not made reservations for a tour and the guide was busy at the time) - this is such a neat little place to visit. It is so great what they do here and how they help the children learn different things. We walked around for an hour or so, and enjoyed lunch in the back section. The young boy who assisted us in taking and bringing our order was only 15 and part of the center there where he was learning culinary arts. He was so polite and helpful. It was just a really nice experience in general and very heartwarming to learn about what Machanents Center does to help the kids See more..

    Khoren Ter-Harutyunyan Museum image
This is a small museum very close to the Echmiatzin complex featuring the work of Khoren Ter-Harutyunyan (sometimes known as Der-Harootian). There are about 30-40 pieces on display ranging from elaborate statues and sculptures to sketches to paintings. The museum is very inexpensive at only 300 AMD per person (USD$0.64). Open hours are 10:30am to 6:00pm Tuesday-Sunday (closed Monday). We saw the whole museum in only about 30 minutes. This is a really nice museum and absolutely a splendid change of pace from the normal viewing of churches and monasteries in Armenia. I highly recommend visiting this museum. See more..

  10. 4.5 Echmiadzin Monastery (241 reviews)
    - Echmiadzin Cathedral is closed for restoration until 2022!
Points of Interest & Landmarks • Religious Sites
    Echmiadzin Monastery image
This is the oldest Cathedral in the whole world! Its construction, by St. Gregory the Illuminator himself, dates from 301/303 AD, following the adoption of Christianity in Armenia, as the "Nation's Official Religion", by King Tiridates III. The complex has an enormous importance for the "Armenian Apostolic Church", as it is the "Mother Sea of Holy Echmiadzin" and the seat of the head of this Church - the "Catholicos of All Armenians" (which is their Pope). Along the centuries, the main building was severely damaged after Persian invasions and has been restored and expanded on many occasions. Actually, it is undergoing an important restoration process and will be probably closed for visitors until 2022. But you can visit the complex, check the Cathedral's exterior, the treasury and the beautiful gardens. Nearby "Saint Hripsime Church", "Saint Gayene Church" and the ruins of the "Zvartnots Temple" are opened for visitors! Enjoy! See more..

The Churches of Echmiatsin and the Archaeological Site of Zvartnots image
Both places can be visited through Bus. If you are staying in Yerevan, you should head to Kilikia Bus Station mainly with Bus number 67 or mini-bus 75 a. From Kilikia, there are mini-buses heading towards Edjmiacin each half an hour. You can stop the mini-bus 2 miles away from the airport cross and pass by the Zvartnots Cathedral. When you finish you regain the main high way to continue towards Edjmiacin. Zvartnots is a very beautiful place, well organized and educational. The museum is a must see. (Entrance 1000 AMD, if you want to take pictures you should pay 1000 AMD). Edjmiacin complex is probably the essential location to get to know Armenian Christians and their history, no entrance fees. When you finish the bus stop is straight in front of Edjmiacin's Cathedrals walls. The same type of mini-buses will take you back to Kilikia bus station (the trip costs 350+350=700 AMD). See more..
  12. 4.5 Saint Hripsime Church (114 reviews)
    - A church consecrated to one of the first Martyrs of Christianity ...
Spent < 1 hour Historic Sites • Architectural Buildings • Churches & Cathedrals
    Saint Hripsime Church image
Built at the 7th century over the ruins of a pagan temple, this is one of the oldest surving Christian churches in Armenia! It is consecrated to the cult of Saint Hripsime, a nun who suffered martyrdom together with 39 other martyrs. Her tomb can be visited in the catacomb below the main altar. The Church has been renovated along the centuries and offers moments of peace and prayer. Enjoy! See more..
  13. 4.5 Zvartnots Temple (91 reviews)
    - The early Christian memories of Armenia ...
Saturday: 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM Ancient Ruins
    Zvartnots Temple image
Near the "Echmiadzin Monastery" and just a few miles out of Yerevan, you will find the ruins of "Zvartnots Temple". Its construction - at the very same site, according to legends, where St. Gregory the Illuminator and King Tiridates III participated in events associated with the conversion of Armenia to Christianity in the year 301 AD - dates from the 7th century. The temple was initially dedicated to St. Gregory the Illuminator and now is known as the "Celestial Angels Cathedral". It collapsed in the 10th century due to uncertain circumstances, either by an earthquake or by Arab invaders' raids. Its ruins were uncovered only in the beginning of the 20th century, revealing awesome columns, capitals, friezes and mosaics, with clear Syrian and Mesopotamian influences. If you are lucky enough, a choir maybe performing old Armenian sacred music at an adjoining building. Visit the ruins, the small museum and check the choir. Enjoy! See more..

National Museum of Armenian Ethnography and History of the Liberation Struggle image
This museum is about a 45 minute drive from Yerevan. It is located on a large complex that also includes the Sardarapat Memorial. I've been to nearly every museum in Armenia and this is by far the best one. It feels modern, very well laid out, spacious, and houses the nicest collection of cultural artifacts I've seen in Armenia. I highly, highly recommend you visit this museum. Entrance fee was 700 dram (about $1.50) per person and guided tour was an additional 3500 dram for the group. I recommend bringing a group of people so that the cost for the guided tour is not much per person. We had a group of 8, so the tour was very affordable! Tour guide spoke exceptional English and really was very nice. She had a great sense of humor. If you do the tour then you should count on your visit taking 1-2 hours. You'll love this museum! Metsamor Historical-Archaeological Museum-Reserve image
This is my second visit to Metsamor Historical-Archaeological Museum-Reserve and my second review. This museum remains to be what I consider one of the hidden gems of Armenia. I am amazed at the high-quality of the artifacts and presentation at this little-known, off-the-beaten-path museum. We arrived at about 1pm on a Saturday and we were the only visitors. It was over-staffed (typical for Armenia) with about 6 workers there plus a security guard. The entrance fee was about $1.50 per person. The first time I visited, I was allowed to take pictures for free. This time they said it would be an additional $2.00 to take pictures. I opted to not take pictures inside -- please see my previous review for the pictures I took last time. Now having been to the majority of Armenia's museums, I can still say this is one of my favorite and absolutely worth finding and visiting. See more..
  21. 4.0 Ziarat Yazidi Temple (6 reviews)
    - Visit the new Yazidi Temple being built next to the old Ziarat Temple
Spent < 1 hour Points of Interest & Landmarks • Religious Sites • Monuments & Statues • Churches & Cathedrals
    Ziarat Yazidi Temple image
If going to or returning from Armavir or Sardarabat, stop by Aknalij village and visit the astoundingly beautiful Yezidi Mother Temple being built right next to the existing older Ziarat Temple. It is all white and hard to miss from the horizon. We witnessed two Yazidi weddings and were warmly welcomed. There are also statues there dedicated to Armenians who were friends and defenders of the Yazidi people, such as Komitas Vartabet and General Antranik. This was an unexpected highlight of our travels from Armavir back to Yerevan. See more..
  22. 4.0 Gevorkian Seminary (5 reviews)
    - Gevorkian Theological Seminary
Spent < 1 hour Religious Sites • Churches & Cathedrals
    Gevorkian Seminary image
Gevorkian Theological Seminary is a theological university[4] of the Armenian Apostolic Church founded by Catholicos George IV in 1874. It is located in the town of Vagharshapat (Etchmiadzin) within the complex of the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin, Armenia. Serious restructuring of the Gevorkian Seminary took place in 1999 when Karekin II, Supreme Patriarch and Catholicos of All Armenians, ascended the throne of Saint Gregory the Illuminator. Catholicos Karekin proposed to increase the number of students while at the same time raising the responsibilities of the administrative and teaching staff. Under the supervision and immediate participation of the Catholicos, the educational curriculum of the seminary underwent fundamental changes. To guarantee a high level of education, doctors, professors and candidates of sciences; who have devoted their lives to educate Armenian youth and develop sciences, were invited to teach in the seminary. Current status In 2001–2002 the Gevorkian Theological Seminary acquired the status of an Institution of Higher Religious Education. After review of the restructuring and enhanced curriculum, the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Armenia granted the seminary the status of a Religious University. In 2002, a major reconstruction effort was undertaken due to the donations of Gevork and Sirvard Hovnanian of the United States. Every room of the seminary has been refinished, and the structural integrity of the building enhanced. The new classrooms were used starting with the 2003/2004 school year. See more..
