  1. 5.0 Alaverdi Guides (116 reviews)
    - Great tour
Hiking & Camping Tours • Day Trips
    Alaverdi Guides image
Daytrip from Tbilisi or this option staying in Alaverdi? That was my question and i opted for the later. Stayed in the old town of Alaverdi and met with my guide at the monastery right next door. The guide was amazing and showed me the 3 UNESCO monasteries on my own time and i had them all for my self. The guide was quite knowledgeable and the office arranged the transfer between the monasteries and the border as well. So can recommend it 100% See more..

    - Visited during a day trip from Tbilisi

    Mikoyan Brothers Museum image
Genuinely something completely different! We see influences of the Soviet Union on our travels through Armenia, but it is part of Armenia’s history that is rarely talked about and often ignored. The Soviet Union left its mark with the concrete tower blocks we see in the regional industrialised towns, but did you know that Armenia had a great influence on the Soviet Union. Two remarkable Armenian brothers you have probably never heard of, born in the small village of Sanahin, who changed not just the Soviet Union, but impacted on world history. Please let us introduce you to ANASTAS and ARTEM MIKOYAN and be prepared to be astonished. ANASTAS was one of the longest serving members of the Soviet Politburo, from the early Stalin years through to Brezhnev. His life and career were extraordinary and never fail to surprise our visitors. ARTEM was the creative genius and co-designer of MIG fighter jets. One of our exhibits is a genuine MiG-21 and we're ENGLISH FRIENDLY See more..

    - A lovely museum experience
Saturday: 2:00 PM - 6:00 PM Spent < 1 hour Speciality Museums • Art Museums
    Tumanyan Matchbox Label Museum image
Quirky little museum with thousands of matchbox labels on display. Too many themes to list, but you'll find many national costumes and town seals, public education labels, space images, and of course match themes. Great place to stop by for 20 minutes and learn about the design, history and art that was ubiquitous in the recent past, but is now nearly unknown. If you'd like to visit outside of regular hours, please call and make an appointment. However while entrance is free during regular hours, visits by appointment have a 1000 dram fee for opening the museum - which includes as many people as you have in your visit. See more..

  10. 5.0 Kayan Fortress (2 reviews)
    - Perfect place for a small hiking
Historic Sites • Ancient Ruins • Points of Interest & Landmarks • Castles • Military Bases & Facilities
    Kayan Fortress image
The Fortress itself is very nice. The walls are mostly ruined and in the middle of the Fortress there are ruins of a small church. Located on the top of the hill, the Fortress is perfect for a short and not very difficult hiking. You will need to start your walking from a point which is on the way to Haghpat Monastery. Please ask locals to show the point (there is also an old bridge which can be a start of your hiking). Then you need to walk around 1 hour. The way is mostly easy, you will need to climb a bit when you are close to the Fortress. Also be aware of snakes - they are not very agresive here, but better if you have closed shoes. See more..
  11. 4.5 Monastery of Sanahin (268 reviews)
    - UNBELIEVABLE SPIRITUAL EXPERIENCE!!!
    Spent 2-3 hours Religious Sites
    Monastery of Sanahin image
This was the 3rd of three Monasteries we visited while in Armenia, and definitely our favorite! The outside looks like some old ruins castle, and the fact that it was build in 966, is just a testament to its durability! The inside has multiple different places of worship, and the most incredible ritual, is the fact that you have to walk over the tombs in order to get to the alter. This is what they call; Stumping their sins! It is actually respectful to walk on the Graves, which is so unusual and unique! We absolutely felt something we've never felt before, as this was such a unique out of body type of experience. You could definitely feel a strong spiritual vibe while walking inside this breathtaking Monastery. An absolute must do if ever in the area! See more..
  12. 4.5 Odzun Church (87 reviews)
    - A splendid example of Armenian ecclesiastical architecture
    Churches & Cathedrals
    Odzun Church image
The church is the centre of a settlement that has grown up on an immense plateau above the Debed river . The oldest part of the building dates from the 5th century . It's great feature externally is the pillared arcade on the south side . It boasts two belfries and an interesting funerary monument in the grounds , thought to date from the 6th century an indication that this is a very ancient settlement . It was Easter Sunday when we were there and the two hour service was just beginning with the priest and his acolytes conducting the proceedings from a high platform on which stands the altar . They were all splendidly robed which gave an impressive air to the ceremony . The congregation seemed to come and go at will though unlike the orthodox they were able to sit down . We couldn't stay long as we were to have an Easter lunch in a local guest house . See more..

  15. 4.5 Kobayr Monastery (31 reviews)
    - Hidden beauty in the mountain! Must see!
    Religious Sites
    Kobayr Monastery image
Kobayr monastery ruins is definitely a must see. It is situated in Lori province on the west side of Alaverdi road. The car drops you off at the bottom of the mountain at a train railway, from there you see long steps from which you climb up steeply up the side of the gorge. Watch for some mud while going up the forest. On your way up you see a few old houses and old ladies who might want to sell you local fruits they have harvested from the forest. Once you're up there you will see how beautiful the ruins are. There are some frescoes inside too. When we went there in September 2015 there were men working on reconstruction. Make sure to go behind the monastery and see the caves to your right. Kobayr monastery has a strong influence of Georgian style as you see some Georgian inscriptions and designs. The hike is well worth it as this is a very beautiful site to see. See more..
