The photos and reviews are actually of the Minas da Passagem, which is located about 4km away from Ouro Preto on the road to Mariana. You can easily take a bus there for 3R from near Praca Tiradentes. Entrance is 26R for adults, slightly less for children and students. The museum above ground is nothing special and has no explanations. However, the 315-meter ride on a rickety rail car at the beginning and end of the tour is the absolute highlight of a trip to the mine - you drop down 120 meters below the surface, and you'll have no trouble imagining yourself 100+ years in the past when this was a working mine. You can't explore very much of the mine, but on a quiet day, the place has a lot of atmosphere, and the mandatory guide who went with me was both very accommodating and a surprisingly good photographer. Something worth mentioning is that you can scuba dive at the mine - but you'll have to call the mine for details. See more..
