Pelișor Castle, Southern Romania, Romania

Fans of Art Nouveau will love this place
Pelisor castle was built at the very end of the 19th Century as a private residence for the heirs to the throne of Carol I, Ferdinand and Marie and reflects many of the relevant design features of the time. As such, Art Nouveau interior design features heavily in the house and fans of this genre will find the house a delight. The one exception is a dazzling ‘Gold Room’ covered almost completely in 24 carat gold leaf. It is a complete contrast to Peles castle being much more understated (apart from the one exception above) but very refined and equally good. Although all the explanatory boards are in Romania, English written guides are handed out on entry. It is generally much less crowded than Peles.

Beautiful Palace with Nice Art Inside… Needs Better Maintenance
A smaller and more modest version of Peles, but still a must see. Here you can see a more intimate and less formal living quarters of a Royal Family. There is less fanfare here. There is artwork of the family throughout place. The admission is separate from Peles and the visiting schedule is also different. Unfortunately this place has the same issues Peles has. Extremely poor organization and maintenance. We also had to share our visit with the cleaning crew here, and although the workers were gracious and polite, one still had to deal with vacuum cleaner’s noise and smell of wood polish. Again poor management!!

Cozy Version of Peles
Beautiful castle. We’ve tried to visit for years but the shorter open hours means we often missed getting to see this smaller, cozier version of Peles. Sadly almost none of the rooms have descriptions in English, but all of the rooms are fully decorated, so we enjoyed imagining what it would have been like to live here. Definitely a must see if you are visiting Peles. There’s a pretty steep fee to take pictures inside.
