4.5Castle Hill(1.841 reviews) - Castle Hill- The Goat Track Spent 1-2 hours Hiking Trails • Scenic Walking Areas
Just metres short of a mountain, Castle Hill is the giant pink granite monolith that stands proud in the centre of Townsville - a perfect place for visitors to orientate themselves. As well as offering vehicle access, Castle Hill provides a number of popular walking tracks, which are frequented by more than 2,500 locals a day! The 360-degree views of Townsville at the top are well worth the journey. Be sure to have a camera on hand, particularly for sunrise or sunset as these are photo opportunities which shouldn't be missed. As well as offering an iconic centre piece for the city and spectacular scenic views, Castle Hill has a significant history. The Hill's vantage was used by visiting American soldiers during World War II. According to local legend, the visitors famously offered to demolish the hill and use the rock to build a bridge to Magnetic Island. A World War II observation bunker sits on one corner of the Hill reminding visitors of Castle Hill's military history. Castle Hill facilities include car parking, public amenities, drink fountains and shaded seating to enjoy while taking in some of the best views of the city and across to Magnetic Island.See more..
4.5Bicentennial Walkway(487 reviews) - Only mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the midday Sun Scenic Walking Areas
We set off about 11 from Airlie Beach for a stroll to Cannonvale, just a half hour stroll along the boardwalk. Oh my, we did it in winter and we were quite footsore by the time we had walked back the other way. Make sure you go earlier or later, the advantage of going earlier is that the Fat Frog Cafe will be open and that is excellent. The walk is well maintained - we passed council workers applying creosote (or similar) to the wood. It also follows the sea so you get some wonderful viewsSee more..

4.5Marrdja Botanical Walk(179 reviews) - Not to be missed Gardens • Scenic Walking Areas
I am not one for wondering around mangrove swamps, but this board walk through the mangroves and rain forest is extremely well done. We took our 6yr old son on this walk and we all really enjoyed it. We chose to do the 2.3km circuit starting with the gradual slope & ending with going down the steep steps. The views around the top are breathtaking! Well worth the walk. And it’s true, you can definitely see sea turtles bobbing around by the rocks, amazing! See more..

Along with 4 Mile Beach, this is a must do activity. The track is unsealed and contains quite a few steps, so not recommended for all. Starting near the North end swimming area of 4 Mile Beach the trail goes round and over the headland, ending at Rex Smeal Park. It takes around 30 mins. See more..

This is one place that money has been invested in a project that allows for the public to get the best views of the bay. The levels of energy required to traverse the pathway is moderate, me being a lower leg amputee had a little more energy burning by the end. Worth taking the time to get out and exercise!See more..

We walked the Botanic walk which was very informative, but because the the horribly dry conditions brought on by another Aussie drought, the are was not at its best. Like time gone by, the drought will break once again and flora and fauna will again flourish. Until the inevitable next drought. This is not changing climate, it is just Australia as it has been for thousands of years.See more..

We did Big Bend, Cathedral Cave, Boowinda Gorge and the Art Gallery and left the others for the next day.See more..
4.5Art Gallery(3 reviews) - Art Gallery Scenic Walking Areas
Whilst only 340m from the main track, that distance is fairly steep to access (sign says gradual uphill, not quite). But once there, the art is quite prevalent and in very good condition. A boardwalk gives you access to view the length of the gallery, with seats and a Visitors book you can leave a comment in. Creek crossing #6 on the way there was fairly easy to navigate. Numerous signs along the boardwalk railing explain the heritage, all-in-all a worthwhile hike. 5.0Boowinda Gorge(2 reviews) - Boowinda Gorge Scenic Walking Areas
It’s a bit of a rock-hop to start, but you eventually find some trails to follow into the twisting gorge. The wind & water carved gorge is quite spectacular and wo the effort to explore If you didn’t want to make the long trek to Boowinda Gorge, try Wurumbah Gorge from the right fork at Mickey Creek instead. That’s a narrower gorge with a bit more drama to explore and can be done in an easy 1hr return. The Harry Thompson Walk is a pathway between the Wallumbilla Showgrounds camp ground to the Information Centre installed in 2010 which passes by the historic Wullumbilla Railway Station. It is however more than just a pathway as it tells the story of Harry Thompson , a recluse who ran horses and cattle at Devils Pulpit north of Wallumbilla who most locals believed was Steve Hart, a member of the Ned Kelly gang who from all accounts died at Glenrowan in Victoria in 1880. Harry Thompson died from burns after his pants caught on fire in 1943 and is buried in Roma and th local folks remembered Harry, (or Steve) with a pathway in his name.
