  1. 4.0 Hamina Fortress (37 reviews)
    - Breathtaking in it's Scale

    Hamina Fortress image
The Hamina Fortress is worth a visit just to marvel at the phenomenal earth moving exercise that must have taken place to construct it. The fortification circles the town, part earthworks, part stone buttressing - and huge stones, no mere feat at all. We visited in October, during Covid-19, so the fortress was deserted and the canopy was not in position; this did reveal the sheer size of the open area though. It is well worth walking the circumference of the fortress and then carrying on along the top of the wall to see the other fortifications. Building and engineering that you seldom see on this scale today. See more..
  2. 4.5 Hamina Town Hall (35 reviews)
    - The Centre of the Town
Spent < 1 hour Historic Sites • Points of Interest & Landmarks • Architectural Buildings
    Hamina Town Hall image
The town of Hamina was planned in a circular design, with the Town Hall having pride of place at the centre - a wide road circling around it and all streets then leading off it. Driving up one of the 'spokes' of this design, one cannot miss the town hall. More formal in design than many of the low wooden buildings which surround it, the town hall stands out, particularly when lit up at night and is a fitting centrepiece for what is really a small town. There is a cafe in one side (we didn't visit) which our daughter, who is living in Hamina, tells us is great for sitting outside and watching the world go by. Other than that, it really is the symbol of the layout of the town. A good photo opportunity and accessible from anywhere in Hamina. See more..
  3. 4.5 Main Building of Military School (21 reviews)
    - Presents Good Photo Opportunities

Main Building of Military School image
Hamina can be described as a military town and so possesses this rather impressive military building, fronting onto a parade ground and with statues and canon around the four sides. If you approach from the town hall, then you walk along a path lined with flags and past some canon; a path then takes you off to the side and leads to the Bastion (fortress). We are keen photographers, particularly my other half, and this building and surrounding environment certainly presents lots of good photo opportunities. See more..

    St. John's Church image
Light colored church is wooden dark inside. I liked the color of the outside when we had wedding here. The stairs gave us troubles when we buried my mother. This it not usually preferred for funerals, but some of the normally used chapels where renovated during that time. The designers had problems how to make air conditioning equipment invisible on the roof.. See more..

German Self-Propelled Gun StuG III image
It was interesting to discover that the swastiga was used by the Finnish Air Force already in 1918 - good information about how the swastiga was used by the Finnish military before it was banned. And the Stug III is worth seeing too. See more..
  8. 3.5 Kyminlinna Fortress (8 reviews)
    - Really well kept

    Kyminlinna Fortress image
I was so impressed with the way the grounds around the fort are maintained. They are absolutely pristine. Once more, I didn't go in and simply looked around from outside. I think I had forgotten how huge this whole area in. I could see a couple of parts that had been recently renovated - not all has yet been finished though. This makes a great hike around the walls. I do recommend having a look if in Kotka for more than a day or two. If with a car, it's easy, otherwise a local bus drops passengers off just nearby. See more..

    - Two historical bridges and beautiful views
Monday: 12:00 AM - 11:59 PM Spent < 1 hour Historic Sites • Points of Interest & Landmarks • Bridges
    Korian sillat image
Korian sillat (Koria Bridges) is the name for two bridges over the River Kymi (Kymijoki). These bridges are important historical landmarks. The older bridge was built in 1870 and it is the oldest truss bridge in Finland. Besides, it is the only Finnish bridge made of cinder pig, e.g. iron made from a mixture of mill cinder with ore or crude metal. The newer bridge was built in 1925. It is one of the first Finnish bridges made of reinforced concrete (ferroconcrete). These bridges and the place are quite beautiful. There are two parking places next to these bridges. The address of the bigger parking place is Läntinen Ratatie 286 and the smaller one is situated at the beginning of Tammirannantie. There is a nice sitting place by the river. See more..

    - Грузоотправители
    Monday: 12:00 AM - 11:59 PM Spent < 1 hour Points of Interest & Landmarks • Monuments & Statues
See more..
