Kyminlinna Fortress, Kymenlaakso, Finland

Really well kept

I was so impressed with the way the grounds around the fort are maintained. They are absolutely pristine. Once more, I didn't go in and simply looked around from outside. I think I had forgotten how huge this whole area in. I could see a couple of parts that had been recently renovated - not all has yet been finished though. This makes a great hike around the walls. I do recommend having a look if in Kotka for more than a day or two. If with a car, it's easy, otherwise a local bus drops passengers off just nearby.

    Renovations are getting there
I've known this place for decades, but have only really had a proper look round this past summer. You can only look round the inside with a guide. I just did the outside. The fortress is right where two branches of the River Kymijoki meet and on the main road out of Kotka, so it's easy enough to visit if you have a car. If you're relying on public transport, you can only really gaze at the walls from the coach windows unless you get off one of the local buses. It's actually pretty huge! There is plenty to see and some parts were renovated as late as last year. There is a summer theatre held in the ruins, but I have never intended. It's a must for people interested in fortresses as it is the only one of its style left in Finland. For the rest of us, it's an interesting diversion.

    Old abandoned base
The fortress was built about 200 years ago. It is one of its kind in Finland but not well maintained. It was a military base until 2005. There are activities to restore the fortress but they are progressing slowly. The fortress is next to main freeway (E18) and those travelling by car could make a stop. It is fairly large area and good for an easy hike during the summer months.
