4.5Catedral de Ourense(654 reviews) - Undiscovered gem Wednesday: 10:00 AM - 3:00 PM Spent < 1 hour Churches & Cathedrals
We came here during our recent short trip to Ourense. We've seen a great many cathedrals in Spain and elsewhere and to be honest, it takes a lot to impress us. But this is a nice little cathedral with a marvellous portico that lets you see what the one in Santiago would have looked like many centuries ago. The portico is still coloured and while it may be a copy, it's still great in its own right. You can look at it for hours and still find new things to see. The reredos is also magnificent and there are interesting side chapels too. I suspect that many people who think that the cathedral in Santiago is better and in some ways, maybe it is, but this one has a particular quiet charm that makes it more appealing.See more..
The sheer size of the Roman Catholic Tui Cathedral is best appreciated from a distance. We got our best overall view as we followed the Camino Português across the bridge that connects Portugal and Spain. Perched on a hill, the town below sits in the cathedral’s shadow. The walk to the cathedral is all uphill but more than worth the effort. The building itself is castle-like, adorned with battlements, towers, and fortifications. Construction started in 1120, the cathedral was consecrated in 1225, the main chapel located in the choir completed in 1699, with of course other changes throughout the centuries. Incredible history! You need at least an hour here. Do not miss the panoramic view from the terrace mirador; also climb the steps to the roof where you can walk the walls.See more..
Superb cathedral with a surprise as it contains a wooden sculpture of the Virgin and Child from the Old (ie pre-Great Fire of London) St Paul's Cathedral in London. There is also a sculpture of St Anne and her daughter, the Virgin Mary, from the same source. One was donated to, the other sold to, Mondonedo after the Reformation. In the cathedral's museum is a lovely sculpture of Joseph and Mary with the boy Jesus between them, hand in hand: I almost wept. The cathedral itself is a fine piece of architecture too, with superb wall-paintings. afterwards, relax with a coffee at the cafe opposite.See more..

4.5Claustro de San Francisco(93 reviews) - Very nice cloister Religious Sites • Churches & Cathedrals
Claustro de San Francisco is the cloister of a monastery and it is located in Ourense, in Galicia Region, in the North of Spain. The cloister was built in a Gothic style during 14th Century, but it has different utilities after confiscation of Mendizabal in 1835. It has some very nice chapiters surrounding the inner part of the cloister, and you can walk in the corridors. Very nice place. Impressive. Probably one of the most, if not the most, ancient churches in Spain. There is a local volunteer that opens the Church when you call him by phone. The phone number is clearly indicated at the entrance. Not to be missed. See more..

Monasterio de San Esteban de Ribas de Sil is a well preserved old monastery, which have been reconverted in a hotel (included in Paradores Nacionales) and it is located in the Canyon of Sil River Region, in Ourense Province, in Galicia. Really the building is big and very nice and you can walk around cloisters and some rooms opened to the public. Also, we went to the bar to drink a glass of local red wine. It is a very nice place to walk, relax and enjoy with surroundings. (See also Monasterio de San Pedro de Rocas and Canon del Sil)See more..
