What a gem! A must stop if you are interested in history, architecture, visionaries or just curious. The thoughtful details of Mr. Dow's designs are inspiring and humbling. His large studio and home are comfortable, cozy and beautiful. Nature at every turn. Special items from travel. Elements of what he learned from others. No photos allowed inside. The docents (we enjoyed Randi's knowledge and enthusiasm) are well trained and passionate. Gift shop has clever choices. Wonderful experience for 3 generations. See more..

  9. 5.0 Midland County Courthouse (1 review)
    - History and Functionality
Spent 1-2 hours Historic Sites • Points of Interest & Landmarks • Government Buildings
    Midland County Courthouse image
I first came across the Midland County Courthouse when I was in Midland, Michigan for a business conference. I noticed it when I was driving at night out of town looking for a supermarket. The building kind of ‘jumps out’ at you because it is well lit. That’s not the only attraction about the place. It is uniquely designed. The shape of the building is attractive, strong and reassuring. Not like a faceless, bureaucratic building at all. I must say, however, that an addition was put on the building, thankfully in the back, and it is a dull, glass and brick affair. In the manner of such buildings that side tries to appear antiseptic and professional but comes off as intrusive to the eye. The main building that I am describing is much more a part of the community. The cornerstone was laid by Professor Dow of Dow Chemical. Much of the paint materials and other items on the outside of the building are or were derived from various Dow products. Almost the entire courthouse, except for the addition, was made from local materials. What an accomplishment! The building is decorated with historic paintings including images of representatives of local Native American tribes and pioneers. It is a very touching set of scenes. Along with the building comes a descriptive historical marker (read both sides!) and a wonderful tribute to members of the armed forces of the United States. See more..

  15. 4.5 Midland Area Farmers Market (30 reviews)
    - Special Farmer's Market Location
    Sunday: Flea & Street Markets
    Midland Area Farmers Market image
Each Wednesday and Saturday Midland has a Farmer’s Market in a nice area just off the downtown area. We decided to go even though we knew that there wouldn’t be much in the way of produce. And there wasn’t. Just off the parking area were several food trucks, several serving BBQ. A number of booths with summer plants. And a few booths selling produce. There was one selling cheese. We tasted a sample and were hooked. We bought two pieces (expensive, about $24). We looked around for something else to buy. But found little. However, our friend spied a booth selling white-fish dip and bought some for our Happy Hour. Even though there weren’t many ‘farmers’ selling produce, it was fun. See more..
  16. 4.5 Emerson Park (22 reviews)
    - Great venue for a picnnic
    Sunday: 6:00 AM - 11:00 PM Parks
    Emerson Park image
What a gem this park is! Lots of space. Lots of playground equipment. Lots of picnic shelters with charcoal grills. We attended a picnic for about 50-60 people. The kids had a great time running around and just being kids while the parents could keep an eye on them, but not worry they would be in traffic. Located along the river and adjacent to the rail trail. See more..
  17. 4.5 Rays Bicycle Shop (19 reviews)
    - Been to a few bike shops, this one is good
    Gear Rentals
I like that they support the local cycling community. I wasn't much into group rides when i was there, but they had their name all around town. They checked out my bike when i had a question, friendly service manager and techs. I never was fond of the sales guys, but that's how it's been at almost all bike shops. So pretentious. I'd go back to look around, but to buy a bike, i had to find a different shop that I got a better vibe from - that taught me what to look for for me specifically, fit me, trained me for group rides. 22. 4.0 Herbert D. Doan Midland County History Center (12 reviews)
    - For the Herbert Dow museum
    Sunday: Speciality Museums
Herbert D. Doan Midland County History Center image
The Dow museum was why we came to Midland. We found that it was part of the Doan. We were not interested in city history, we chose to drive there for the Dow. First thing to understand is it is open only one weekend a month. Second is it is an interactive museum. Finally, the information is very valuable and worth while. Fortunately, we happened to find a curator who loves their museum and took pity on travelers from CA. The Dow is a must on for anyone loving science and history. See more..
