A must see

What a gem! A must stop if you are interested in history, architecture, visionaries or just curious. The thoughtful details of Mr. Dow's designs are inspiring and humbling. His large studio and home are comfortable, cozy and beautiful. Nature at every turn. Special items from travel. Elements of what he learned from others. No photos allowed inside. The docents (we enjoyed Randi's knowledge and enthusiasm) are well trained and passionate. Gift shop has clever choices. Wonderful experience for 3 generations.

    Neat house
I was in town for a day and looked up things to do in Midland beforehand. Had no idea that Dow Chemical was based here. So I went on this tour knowing nothing about the history of the family. It was easy to make a reservation online. Tour lasted an hour and a half. I wouldn't say I'm an architecture fan, but last year I did make an effort to visit some Frank Lloyd Wright houses. The Dow house was really cool and much like the Frank Lloyd Wright houses. It’s built with a pond coming right up to the window of the living room. Pretty awesome. The tour was good. It started pouring shortly after the tour started so we didn't get to go out on the stepping stones in the pond. Neat watching the rain falling on it though. The biggest drawback is they don't allow pictures inside. Not much in the gift shop either. And there wasn't much to take photos of in front. The back side, which you don't have access to, has the better view of the house. Definitely glad I had the day to spend in Midland to see this place. They also were really smart about Covid and made people wear masks. Missed the parking area when I first drove in. It's off to the left behind the old schoolhouse. Be advised they lock up your belongings so it's best to just leave the purse in the car.

    Very interesting!
We're Mid-Century Modernism fans, so we combined the visit to the Dow house with a monthly interior self-guided tour of 3 MCM homes built by various architects. The houses are owner occupied. To find out more about those tours, there is an active MID-CENTURY MODERN MIDLAND app which you can download. It has maps of many MCM neighborhoods in Midland. The Dow house was definately quirky! Those architects just wanna have fun! No idea spared to make a house that appears to sit in a pond. It's neat that the family furniture and art still remain as well as all the Alden Dow personal and professional library of works. Our tour guide, Sarah, was wonderful and had a thorough knowledge of all things in regards to the house and family who lived there. The tour lasted just over two hours. Make a weekend of it and visit Dow Gardens, which are lovely. You will walk a few miles here!
