Things to do & places to visit in Devon, United Kingdom

Devon cover image
Devon Cottages - The Ultimate in Relaxing Breaks From the wilds of Dartmoor to the wooded hillsides of the Lyn Valley, Devon is undoubtedly one of England's most beautiful counties. Its overwhelmingly rural landscape means that catered accommodation is restricted to over-subscribed Bed and Breakfasts and hotels which are mostly concentrated in towns like Exeter and Barnstaple. Devon is a great location for a family holiday in the great outdoors, with everything from beach resorts at Ilfracombe to rambling in the hills of Exmoor and tors of Dartmoor. It is a large county, but whether you want to follow the Tarka Trail, or walk down the Doone Valley, you can be sure there will be cottages open for holiday rentals nearby. Devon's Cottages, All Mod Cons Most of Devon's holiday rental cottages started as farm buildings of some sort, and planning restrictions mean that many of them retain their rural charm on the outside. However, the cottages are generally renovated to 21st Century standards inside, with double glazing, TV, washing machines and fully-equipped kitchens. Families are well catered for in the higher end properties with games rooms, sometimes including full-size pool tables and large gardens for children to explore. Despite the unpredictability of Devon's weather even during the summer months, the comfort of these properties gives great peace of mind. Moreover, a week's holiday rental of a cottage in Devon can cost as little as £300 - £400. During the peak season you can spend as much as £900 a month for one of the larger or more luxurious cottages, which still works out to be cheaper than a lot of hotels, especially if you have to book several rooms to accommodate a family of four or five. Town Mouse or Country Mouse To get the best of Devon's startling countryside and its friendly communities, renting a holiday cottage near Lynton and Lynmouth can be a good start. It is a useful base from which to explore North Devon, and is within walking distance of several beauty spots, such as Watersmeet (complete with a small but impressive waterfall) and the Valley of the Rocks. Separated by a steep cliff, you can travel up a funicular railway from coastal Lynmouth to clifftop Lynton, with plenty of stunning walks, shopping opportunities and several beaches and boat trips to nearby coastal attractions. The twin villages also boast a concentration of well-equipped holiday cottages, from modest fisherman's cottages on the path to Watersmeet to grander hillside houses on the way to the Valley of the Rocks. Whatever your budget, Lynton and Lynmouth can provide some tempting accommodation options for your first Devon holiday.

    Coleton Fishacre image
We have visited Coleton FishAcre at different times of the near and have never been disappointed- there is so much colour and variety, it is so interesting and relaxing (well apart from the hill walk). Although the cafe is good, be warned that both finding a table and the queues can be huge at lunchtimes even on week days, maybe the NT should consider having a seasonal kiosk selling cold drinks and chocolates etc. But in the meantime I would recommend that you take a sandwich and drink with you and enjoy it. - Second time round and it's still awesome
Monday: 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM Surfing & Windsurfing • Gear Rentals • Stand Up Paddleboarding • Kayaking & Canoeing
    Woolacombe Surf Centre image
Ok as I promised last year, I returned for more lessons with the gang at Woolacombe Surf Centre. I was a bit later in the month than last time which meant some of the crew had already finished for the season but fortunately Sam was ready to put me through my paces and check out my specific style of gangly waving arms technique which sometimes and somehow keeps me on a surfboard. Once again I have nothing but praise for the knowledge of my instructor Sam, the quality of the equipment in use and the way I was treated like an old friend returning after a long absence. I would also like to say a big thank you for the way you looked after my stepson Jordan who thoroughly enjoyed his morning session but failed the longevity challenge of an afternoon session. We will be returning next year only hopefully leaner, fitter and slightly greyer but even more motivated to conquer the gangly arms and maybe try one of those out back waves. See more..
  4. 5.0 Rock Solid Coasteering (916 reviews)
    - Challenging Fun
    Adrenaline & Extreme Tours
    Rock Solid Coasteering image
An incredible experience! My friend and I booked a last minute morning of coasteering by simply calling them, so a very simple booking process. All equipment (including trashable trainers) was expertly selected for size and provided at no extra cost! We set off with another group of 5 who were very friendly and our leader Rich who throughout the excursion gave great demonstrations and explanations of what to do and how to safely get in and out of the water, followed by cliff jumping, bouldering and swimming. We even saw two grey seals however we couldn’t get too close due to the risk of scaring the seals away from their natural habitat. Once we were all tired and cold and wet our leader pulls out a steaming hot flask of hot chocolate that worked wonders and geared us up for the final stretch , a lovely walk and chit chat over the coastal path back to base. Would highly recommend coasteering with these guys to anyone wishing to challenge themselves or just have fun!! See more..

    Seaton Tramway image
Seaton Tramway operates narrow gauge heritage trams between Seaton, Colyford and Colyton in East Devon's glorious Axe Valley, travelling alongside the River Axe estuary through two nature reserves and giving an unrivalled view of the abundant wading bird life. The coastal resort of Seaton is now a gateway town to the Jurassic Coast, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, whilst the historic town of Colyton is described as "Devon's Most Rebellious Town" for its part in the Monmouth Rebellion of 1685.The company originated at the Lancaster Electrical Company of Barnet, which manufactured battery electric vehicles. In 1949 its owner, Claude Lane, indulged his hobby by building a miniature 15” gauge tram, which he ran at garden fetes. This portable system enjoyed temporary homes at St Leonard’s and Rhyl before evolving onto the 2’ gauge Eastbourne Tramway. Many of the present trams were built at Eastbourne, but by the mid 1960’s the tramway’s success was outgrowing the mile line. Claude therefore began to look for alternative locations. In late 1969, Claude purchased the Seaton to Colyton section after the branchline had been closed by Dr Beeching in 1966 and, after a mammoth relocation from Eastbourne, the first section was opened in 1980. Since then the tramway has developed into one of Devon’s best loved attractions.New trams have been added to the fleet and the buildings have been much improved in order to meet the needs of the thousands of enthusiastic people who visit each year. The Barbican image
We’ve seen this speciality of top quality all you can eat roast beef in a huge variety of cours and flavours, in other cities but we don’t think it’s a chain. Opened mid February. We came to Lost in Rio in Bretonside this weekend and it was great. Booked on line for early evening and it was bustling and packed with all ages and types. Amply equipped with a large enthusiastic staff and operating a first rate fixed price all you can eat system. You load your plates with salas, rice and all the sides and then a stream of servers come. Your table with large spits from which they cut as much or many slices as you want. And throughout they offer well constructed and mixed predominantly Brazilian style cocktails. Partway through our stay a live band arrived. We had a very tasty hearty and lubricated couple of hours. A welcome innovation and boon to the Barbican area. See more..

There are areas for swimming, water sports, sunbathing and rock pooling and an area popular with people walking dogs but it’s a couple of miles long so plenty of room for all. Very popular and I’d imagine crowded at weekends but great when we went midweek See more..
  28. 4.5 Westward Ho Beach (1.647 reviews)
    - Doggy Delight - Westward Ho! Beach
    Beaches
    Westward Ho Beach image
This would be a 4.5 out of 5 if that were possible and I am talking about the dog beach here, although they are all joined together so it is really one place. This is a beautiful, long and largely un-populated beach, very shallow so very distant low tides. The initial approach is over large smooth stones or via a ramp next to the Life Guard hut. What follows, at low tide, is a huge sandy beach, seemingly a mile or so wide and a couple of hundred metres to the sea. It is flat, unspoilt and clean with families dotted about. There was quite a wind on the days we went and the sea had robust waves which the surfers were enjoying. Swimming was also great ( The Atlantic chill gives way to comfortably numb very quickly). We were staying a short walk away but if you needed to drive then car parking was pretty easy and cost £5.00 a day. See more..
