   Были с мужем на экскурсии в долине Дьявола. Хотя, ничего дьявольского в ней нет, скорее наоборот! Впечатляющие и неожиданно красивые места. В следующем году хотим вернуться сюда и уже сами провести время - спокойно и без толпы. Особенно красивым в этой долине нам показался Арбузинский каньон - тут и водоем и огромные камни и каменистые склоны - такое не ожидаешь встретить в нашей степной зоне! Идеальное место для фотосессий и для единения с природой. Конечно, лучше в первый раз поехать с людьми, которые знают эти места - мы бы вряд-ли нашли их самостоятельно. See more..

   Before coming to Nikolaev, (called Mykolayiv in Ukrainian, but they speak Russian in this area,) I knew this was the shipbuilding capital of the former USSR, this museum does a great job of going through naval history, and showing the part Nikolaev played. Rooms are arranged chronologically, with displays explained in Ukrainian and Russian. Most of the rooms also have a piece of paper describing the room in English. See more..

    A great museum. Friendly staff as soon as I walked in. A nice souvenir room. (I found heaps of postcards, yippee!) The museum has exhibits on two floors. One of the ladies told me you only get to see a percentage of all the items the museum owns, I suppose the rest are in storage somewhere.     I've visited the place a couple of times and always during quiet days, when it seemed as if I was the only visitor there - a bit awkward at first, but once I got over that, I was able to fully enjoy the art without being disturbed. The collection consists mostly out of local (Russian and Ukranian) art, with a rather strong emphasis on the XIX century painting, but there is also a Western art and a religius art section. The painting of Vasily Vereshchagin, in whose honour the museum is named, is also well presented and several fascinating pictures depict exotic locations and military scenes. Also, there seem to be regular exhibitions by more contemporary local (Mykolayiv and Ukranian) artists and photographers, or thematical exhibitions of historical artifacts. In short, if you're visiting Mykolayiv and you're up for some culture, do pay a visit to this place - you might see something interesting, and for just a euro or two you'd be supporting a local art centre ;) See more..

    Actually, it is a Blue Lake, first of all because it is really blue. And the coordinates of this lake on this site are wrong! Its real coordinates are: 48.021650, 30.967325. This is very beautiful lake with clear water very close to the Pivdennyi Buh river. It is a known place for everyone who loves active rest and rafting. My advice to you: book a hotel room in the Guest House (Гостиный двор), they have very comfortable rooms for low prices. See more..

    Foreman Ivan Gorich monument can be equally called the memorial to the heroes of the Russo-Turkish War of 1787-1791. It is very unusual, and I think deserves to be seen even if you are not too keen on the military history. It wasn’t too hard to find as it’s situated in the centre of Ochakiv, in a small public garden at the crossroad of Schmidt and (if I’m not mistaken) Lenin streets. Ivan Gorich, the hero of 1768-1774 Russo-Turkish war, was a colonel then brigadier by the beginning of the next war of 1787. During the 1788 Ochakiv (the then Turkish fortress) military assault, Gorich was the commander of the largest and best-manned 6th column, assigned with direct attack of the fortress’ 5th bastion from the north-east. To cut the attack time, most of the military men used no ladders or entrenching equipment. At the head of the column, Gorich was one of the first up to the ramparts and died in the battle. Prince Grigory Potemkin described this moment of the Ochakiv assault in his report: “Intrepid hero foreman Gorich, who had marked his service with incredible bravery, was the first up on the bastion, together with his demise”. The monument is symbolic; you won’t see the traditional statue of a military hero. Instead, it is represented by the eagle with outspread wings that is sitting on the top of the pyramid gathered from 30 cannonballs. Few more cannonballs are placed in each corner around the pyramid pedestal. This is not an original monument, but a somewhat rougher replica of the earlier one, created by the supreme permission in 1903. Sadly, it has been too often in the focus of local vandals. Not only there were numerous attempts to steal the cannonballs, but also one of the plates on the monument had been stolen recently. Such a shame. See more..
