- 5.0 Saviour-Transfiguration Cathedral (33 reviews)
-A must see attraction in Chernigov!
Churches & Cathedrals
A must see attraction in Chernigiv is the Spaso-Preobrazhensky Cathedral (Spassky Cathedral) in the old rampart of the town, built by the first Chernihiv prince Mstislav - the son of great Kiev prince Vladimir, Baptist of Russia. Spassky Cathedral is actually the oldest orthodox cathedral surviving on the territory of Kievan Rus. It was founded in 1024 and it is the oldest Orthodox church in Ukraine and in Russia, founded a few years even before the famous St. Sophia Cathedral and is under construction right now but still operates as a church. Today Spassky Cathedral is the only surviving monument (on the left bank of Ukraine) of architecture of the blossoming period of Kievan Rus and is a part of the National reserve Old Chernigov. -Ильинская церковь и Антониевы пещеры
Churches & Cathedrals
See more..
- 5.0 Boyan Monument (4 reviews)
-Давняя история
Spent < 1 hour Points of Interest & Landmarks • Monuments & Statues
See more..
- 4.5 Saint Anthony Caves (110 reviews)
-Very old and holy place!
Caverns & Caves
I like this place so much!! Saint Anthony Caves are the first caves monks dig up in Ukraine. This place is very very old. When you come inside you feel all that great and holy energy. Here are located underground churches and some people say that sometimes they see how the spirit of one monk goes through underground streets. It's a little terrible but also very exciting. Highly recommend visiting if you'll come to Chernigiv! See more..

- 4.5 Citadel of Baturin Fortress (30 reviews)
-See the history
Saturday: 9:00 AM - 5:30 PM Historic Sites • Points of Interest & Landmarks
Baturyn is a great place for a weekend trip. In the old hetman capital (now the small quiet city) located few interesting attractions that will leave you unforgettable impressions. The Citadel of Baturyn - one of them. At The Citadel you can seen not only reconstruction of wooden walls, but also such attractions as church, Hetman house, treasury and lovely views of the river Seim. A trip to Baturyn also be interesting to those who like to relax in the open air, because through the city flows the river at the banks of which you can put a tent and enjoy the combination of visiting cultural attractions and outdoor recreation. The main and major disadvantage of Baturyn is the difficulty to get there. The best way to get to the Baturyn is by car, because it's hard to get to the city on your own, especially on weekdays. Nevertheless, the impression of a trip to Baturyn would worth it. See more..
- 4.5 Kirill Razumovsky Palace (30 reviews)
-Beautiful Restoration
Saturday: 10:00 AM - 5:30 PM Spent 1-2 hours Historic Sites • Castles
The Rozumovskyi Palace at Baturyn , for most of its history remained in ruin after a fire in 1824 destroyed the interior. Due to Baturyn’s significance as the Hetman’s capital, Prime Minister Yushenko in 2002, with the help of Ukrainian businessmen undertook to restore the palace. The result is stunning. The palace design is in the classical style and was built under the direction of Kyrylo Rozumovskyi, the last hetman of Left Bank Ukraine in 1799 - 1803. No expense has been spared in the renovations, from the inlaid hardwood floors to the marble staircases. The detail work on the ceilings is dramatic and furniture period pieces are interspersed throughout. The dining room was impressive. There was an English guide available who toured us through the palace with obvious pride. She even paused and played us a piece on the piano. Although little or none of the interior is original it has been painstakingly restored to the period as much as possible and the outcome is superb. See more..
- 4.5 Taras Shevchenko Monument in Dytynets (26 reviews)
-Unusual and striking
Monuments & Statues
There are many statues of Taras Shevchenko in Ukraine and that's quite natural. It's the most prominent Ukrainian poet and artist, who felt the soul of Ukraine like no one else. This monument is, however, unique in two ways: firstly, it depicts the poet at relatively young age (33), secondly, in replaced an old, Soviet-style statue. It's full of life and glory at the same time. When you are in Dytynets, do have a look. See more..
- 4.5 St. Catherine Church (23 reviews)
-Face of the city.
Churches & Cathedrals
St. Catherine Church is like a cover of a magazine. It is the first city sight that you see when you go to Chernihiv from Kiev. Besides standing on the edge of the city (which happened to be the center of Chernihiv), this church is also located on the top of the hill, so you see it for a while before entering the city by car (if you are driving from Kiev). Another place, where you can have a nice view to this church is Dytynets (also known as "Val"). Because of many trees and canons on this hill, it brings additional atmosphere to the church from that point of view. Even if you are not religious, make sure to make picture of yourself on the background of St. Catherine Church from Dytynets. We (a couple) recommend it! See more..
- 4.5 The National Historical and Cultural Reserve Kachanivka (22 reviews)
-Fantastic historical and cultural reserve - worth a visit
Spent 2-3 hours Architectural Buildings • Parks
Kachanivka is located in Chernigivska Oblast, c. 2 hour drive from Kiev, however well worth the trip. The reserve offers a unique experience: -The tour of the main Kachanivka Palaca (which used to belong to the Tarkovsky family) provides a unique insight into the history of the region and Ukraine as a whole -The reserve has a number of other buildings and statues dating back to the 19th century -A number of large lakes are located on the territory of the reserve offering beautiful views, particularly in summer / spring (visited Kachanivka in August) If you are travelling to the area would also recommend spending the night at Соколиний хутір (provides accommodation in traditional Ukrainian houses from 19th century, horse riding, fishing, other excursions and tours) - the host was incredibly accommodating and knowledgable about the history of the region. - 4.5 Chernihiv Glory Memorial (13 reviews)
-Beautiful area - lots to photo
Monuments & Statues
At the edge of Boldyn Hills park, alongside the burial places (“kurgans”) of Slavonic warriors, there is a grave of Unknown soldiers, warriors who gave their lives in the Great Patriotic War (WWII). When battles for capturing the city of Chernihiv by fascist invaders were being fought, a woman of Chernihiv buried four lost soldiers in her family garden. In 1967, the graves were opened, and the names of three soldiers were discovered, they were buried in brotherly grave. The name of the fourth warrior remained unknown. He was buried here on the Boldyn Hills, at Chernihiv’s highest place. To commemorate all the warriors who were killed on the fronts of Great Patriotic War, the Eternal fire was lit in 1967. The Eternal fire is burning on the Grave of the Unknown soldier side by side with the ancient burial mounds on the top of the Boldin Hill as the homage of those who died in the battle for independence of our Motherland. The ancient part of Chernigiv and Holly grove are well seen from this place. The old legend says that Chernihivites were baptized in that grove in 992. See more..

Parks
See more..

-Museum trip
History Museums
Went to the Chernihiv Military Museum today and have to say it really was worth the visit, been living here for a few years now, but this was my first visit, will not be my last. Its not a large museum but so well laid out, staff more than helpful, ground floor general history and the first floor, was WW11, Cold war, Afganistan, nice simulater cockpit of a Mig 23, in all a very good visit. Happy that Tamara joined me as she could explaine the bits I could not read. Would I recomend this to anyone then I have to say, if your ever out this way and in town, then its something that should not be missed. John Martin See more..
