   This is a museum which is a gem for all the region. Founded by an altruistic art historian as a tribute to his birthplace it contains invaluable ethnographic details. Besides, it is a case of design and architecture. Its location is majestic. I haven't tried its guest house but I assume one can spend some time here in this magical site to do some intellectual or artwork. See more..

   Bayburt Castle dominates the city and gives extensive views over the surrounding grasslands and rolling hills. Çoruh River runs through the city of Bayburt, and then around the base of the hill on which the castle stands. There is no evidence of the homes of the 3000 people who lived here in the past. The castle was inhabited until 1829 when it was destroyed by Russians. There had been dwellings on the site since 3000 BC. The huge castle walls standing today were built between 1200 and 1230. Entry is free. There is a car park. Route to the castle is signposted for walking and driving. Paths in the castle are uneven and in parts steep. See more..

   One of the fastest running rivers in Turkey, Çoruh River runs through spectacular scenery from it's source in the Mescit Mountains to the Black Sea near Batumi, across the border in Georgia. In Bayburt the river is enclosed in a concrete culvert and the parkland on the banks does little to improve the appearance, but does give a place for a drink looking at the water. After flowing around the base of Bayburt castle hill the Çoruh heads out though the mountains in a series of valleys, canyons and waterfalls. The river can be followed on the road from Bayburt to Ispir and gives great views for much of the way. See more..
