Baoshan Stone Town is an old and small town with one hundred families built on a huge stone on the upper Yangtze riverbank, located 110km to the North of Lijiang, Yunnan Province. This town was built in the late 13th century and resided by Naxi Ethnic Minority ever since then. With one side facing the Upper Yangtze River, the other three sides are steep cliffs. We hat lunch at the 63 cafe (amazing) and the owner gave us a fascinating history lesson on Joseph Rock, botanist, author and explorer. I was told by the local people that Baisha Towm is the birthplace of Naxi culture and the center of Southern Silk Road with 1200 years history. It has been famous for the ancient mural about 600 years and Baisha Naxi Embroidery Institute. I just spent 3 hours there, but it made me just feel like in so called Shangerila. Especialy I was moved by the skill and spirit of Naxi embroidery masters in the institute. It is very worthy to be there. See more..

This lamesary built in the Qing Dynasty has a 500 year old Camelia Tree which we did not see in full bloom but none the less quite a tree that was saved during the Cultural Revolution by a monk as he told them to chop himself down with a sword instead of the tree. Best recommendation by our tour guide to see visit the spruce plateau instead of going up the glacier park at the jade dragon snow mountain. Unless you are part of a large tour group going up the glacier park is almost impossible. Our private guide recommended this trail and we got stunning views of the mountain top too. A nice and easy walk but bring along a can of oxygen - it does help with the breathing at this height. See more..

What makes a picturesque village? This ancient village has all the potential, located at the foothills of Yulong Snow Mountain with narrow endless stone alleys. All the houses were made by Naxi people using unique stones with “Bird Wing Roofs”. Yuhe Lake is beside the village. We went to the Former Residence of Luo Ke and had the opportunity to enjoy the fresh air and this beautiful serene beauty. There are donkey rides and souvenir shops. The yak meadow ropeway was closed for maintenance so we opted for this meadow (spruce meadow). We were surprised at the number of tourists with rented heavy coats and oxygen bottles. It’s only 3200m and was a warm June day!! I guess if people had come from sea level they might’ve needed O2. Anyway there was an option to take an e car to the top of the meadow or walk the slight incline. We walked. The whole boardwalk was a couple km I think but it was well maintained and wide enough for lots of people. The meadow was beautiful in the shadow of YuLong mountain. There were sheep and goats but no yaks. Also the ever common bride and photographer! It was a nice walk around and would be a great spot for a picnic lunch or to just hang out for the day. Even when quite young I read some of the accounts of Joseph Rock concerning the Lijiang region and the Naxi people (whom he calls 'Nakhi'), so it was a thrill to finally visit his former house in the Naxi village of Yuhu. There was a fee for visiting, and we were shown in by an old man who works as the caretaker. The house was bought a number of years ago by a local enthusiast, whose grandfather knew Dr Rock personally. The contents of the house are sparse, and consist largely of old photos of Dr Rock and the Naxi, along with various books published over the years by and about Rock. It is a very peaceful house, and you can easily imagine the Austro-American sitting there working on Dongba manuscripts, or examining and cataloguing local plants. The house bears testimony to a little-known facet of local history. See more..

The air here was much cleaner than in Chinese cities, we didn't have a problem with polution at all. The scenery is spectacular with differently shaped mountains (some obviously phallic shaped, others looking like a teapot or the Chinese "Monkey King." The hike is strenuous and even a bit harrowing in places where the stairs go straight up, but my 61 year old parents were able to do it. There were several temples along the way where you could see monks running up and down the stairs, as well as many restrooms and conveniently placed shops to restock on water and snacks. Many of the local people looked like they were there on dates, so the girls climbed the whole huge mountain in uncomfortable looking slippers and heels. See more..

I was thinking that it was a photo that Joseph Rock took about 100 years ago of a monk printing prayers onto the river here that I first saw about 50 years ago, that was what really motivated me to visit this spot, more famous as where 18,000 troops of the "Long March" crossed the Yangtse . Close to Lijiang, and also known as Jade Water Village, this is a network of winding trails surrounding a series of beautiful pools cascading down the mountain. As you enter the park, you are greeted by elderly Naxi women singing in traditional dress. There are several religious sites at the upper reaches including the Shiluo Temple and a sacred spring. There is also a theater for Naxi music performances and some workshops. Bright Dongba murals expounding a harmonious relationship with nature are also found here.
