   We visited this amazing UNESCO heritage site in early June. Originally built in the early 1600 (during the Ming dynasty) it's one of the best kept round houses in China. Even though the journey to this site from nearby town is a challenge (winding road up on a mountain ridges along a winding river), it's worth the effort. Off-season means that we had the place all to ourselves. There is some English info at the gate, but I'd recommend reading up before or bring along a travel book. For those who read Chinese, there's a lot more information right at the gate. If you don't speak the language, your best bet is to get a local guide and/or driver. See more..

   This is a compact little center that offers two aspects of Hakka culinary experience: (1) lessons in many natural herbal ingredients used in Hakka (and generally Chinese) cooking, and (2) a great menu of some very classic Hakka dishes to sample. Prices are either slightly higher or comparable to outside restaurants. I visited the place during a quiet period (no major holidays) and the staff was extremely friendly and helpful, and provided a lot of help to guide us. See more..

   The town has clearly spent a lot of money developing the entire area around the park with this wonderful Hakka building as its centrepiece. It's a 270 year old building that used to house 200 families. Unfortunately, right next to this house is a commercial street and a block away there is this huge apartment complex being built that shows up in every shot. Call it poor planning? or corruption?, but they should have built this park with the Hakka house in the centre. See the photo of the poster without all the ugly commercial buildings around it. It's a real shame that future generations won't be able to fully enjoy the beauty of this structure. Admission was 30rmb. See more..

    A small tourist sight that is packed in the end of a one way street. Entrance fee is required to get into the former residence. Nicely done write up of Zhang Bi shi in Mandarin & English. Had a chat with the 5th generation descendant about their past. Scenery was nice. You will like it if u r a museum person. Guess it's only great for 1 visit. See more..
