  3. 4.5 Cape of Good Hope (6.931 reviews)
    - Well Worth the Trip!
Saturday: 7:00 AM - 5:00 PM Spent 1-2 hours Nature & Wildlife Areas • Lookouts
    Cape of Good Hope image
Contrary to popular belief the Cape of Good Hope is not the southernmost point of the African continent. Instead, it is Cape Agulhas which we were not lucky enough to get to on our voyage. However, our trip to the Cape of Good Hope and Table Mountain National Park was fantastic! It's worth the hike up the hill to the lighthouse and the flora and fauna are just wonderful to enjoy. I saw wild Zebra, Ostrich, Kudu and Spring Bok and a large female Baboon was hanging around or picnic area waiting for just the right morsel to appear. She did spy a nice man and child's ice cream, but they weren't giving it up and managed to evade her. After going through the garbage, she decided she was not happy with leftovers and promptly moved to the exit of the cafe where she managed to swipe a whole fresh lunch from a man's hand. Of course, he was stunned and not thrilled but as a rule of thumb goes you NEVER argue with a hungry Baboon and gracefully surrender your goods. Highly entertaining and worth the time! See more..

    - Interactive and engaging
Saturday: 9:00 AM - 3:00 PM Spent 1-2 hours Nature & Wildlife Areas
    Knysna Elephant Park image
The Knysna Elephant Park (est. 1994) was the first facility in South Africa to house and care for orphaned African elephants. Over the last 25 years, the park has cared for and raised more than 40 elephants. These animals include relocated animals, orphaned calves, elephants rescued from culls and ex-circus animals. Some have become part of the resident herd, others have moved onto other reserves and facilities in the Western and Eastern Cape, depending on their personalities, bonds with other animals and welfare needs. The present KEP herd numbers ten – the largest domesticated matriarchal herd in the country. Our style of management offers guests the opportunity to get up close and personal with our elephants, on elephant terms. Responsible and educational interactions allow guests to appreciate the awe-inspiring presence of these animals, but still give the elephants the space and freedom to choose where they want to move, what they want to eat and who they want to interact with. 6. 5.0 Robberg Nature Reserve (2.597 reviews)
    - A great day out
Saturday: 8:00 AM - 6:00 PM Nature & Wildlife Areas
    Robberg Nature Reserve image
With a clearly marked trail all around and stunning views at every turn, we loved being out on the Robberg Peninsula. There are 3 trails to follow, each taking in overlapping and increasingly long routes. We completed the full hike and, with only moderate levels of fitness, we were certainly glad to get to the end 4.5 hours after setting out but loved every step. From the high up north side views look out over Plett and down over colonies of resident seals, while from the south side the trail drops down to almost sea-level where we spent time sitting and watching the endless waves crashing in. The access road to the peninsula is good and it is easily reached from Plett. The carpark was very full when we arrived in the middle of the day but the trail didn't feel overly busy. The small cafe shack selling drinks and treats was much appreciated at the end of our hike. Entrance fees are charged (R60). See more..

    - Just beautiful
    Nature & Wildlife Areas
Cape Columbine Nature Reserve Tietiesbaai image
We were in this area to see the flowers and this reserve did not disappoint. The combination of flowers and seascape was extraordinary. The only disappointment was that we could not visit the lighthouse due to Covid restrictions. While in the reserve we stopped along the road a few times and also went down to the seashore at a camping site and a place called the Sea Shack. At the latter there was a labyrinth - just lovely to walk and then sit on the bench and watch the little cove. My mother walked in the other direction and had an equally lovely time. See more..
  24. 4.5 Bird Island Nature Reserve (237 reviews)
    - 2000 Gannets!
    Nature & Wildlife Areas
    Bird Island Nature Reserve image
Bird Island is an amazing sight! Even if you don't particularly birds, you will be impressed. We saw around 2000 Cape Gannets, including fluffy chicks. Watching the birds fly in and out of the colony from the nearby hide was amusing and it was a lot of fun watching the birds interact (there are posters in the hide explaining what they're doing). Surprisingly the colony didn't smell! As well as the Gannets, there are various species of Cormorants and Terns. The entry fee was well worth it to get this close to some amazing sea birds (you'd otherwise have to be out of sea to see the Gannets), and of course, your fee goes towards their conservation. Garden Route Wolf Sanctuary image
Run largely as a rescue facility, they have a lot of wolves and wolf/dog crossbreeds. The guided tour is well worthwhile - you get to go in with those animals that enjoy human contact, and they're delighted to spend time with you. Equally, you can get as close to the wolves as they will permit - which might not be all that close! The staff are obviously very knowledgeable and caring about their animals, and will really take their time with you. Recommended. See more..
  26. 4.5 Paarl Mountain Nature Reserve (207 reviews)
    - Drive, climb, picnic, hike and fish
    Nature & Wildlife Areas
    Paarl Mountain Nature Reserve image
The drivable routes inside the reserve amount to around 25 km. Most of them can be driven in a regular sedan, but some are badly eroded and a vehicle with high ground clearance is highly recommended. There are three large granite domes in the reserve: Paarl Rock, Bretagne and Gordon's Rock. The former can be climbed by families including children, but Bretagne is too dangerous for small children unless they are tethered to adults. Gordon's Rock can only be climbed by skilled mountaineers. There are three picnic sites in or near the reserve and the ablution facilities were neat and tidy during my visit. You have to pay to enter on weekends and public holidays but entry is free during the week. See more..

Phillipskop Mountain Reserve protects 246ha of beautiful fynbos on the slopes of the Klein River Mountains. There are a range of hiking trails for all abilities leading to a small waterfall, the peak of Phillipskop itself, interesting rock formations, such as the David and Goliath Rock Stacks, as well as lots of magnificent views. The trails can be combined into longer circular routes. WATERFALL HIKING TRAIL (3.5km) An easy, more or less level, hike to a small waterfall with a popular picnic spot underneath a beautiful rock candlewood tree. This is also the route to take to access Phillipskop Cave. We stayed 3 nights in "Coot" cottage. It was superbly comfortable, clean and well appointed. Lovely view of the waterfilled pan and flamingo flocks. The Eco toilet was something new to us which we found (as far as any toilet can go!) an altogether acceptable experience. The staff are super helpful and pleasant too. Cell phone reception was not good - our MTN got reasonable coverage whilst our Vodacom was non-existent! Nice drives and walks and the Dwarskersbos village is a mere 10 or so km away. As one cannot park next to the Universal cottages my only suggestion to the management would be to provide some sort of trolley/cart for guests to convey their luggage/supplies to and from the car to cottage. Lovely deck to sit on and view the birds feeding their chick and basically just living their life. Yes, it does smell a bit, but what would you expect from a heronry. The dam could do with a bit of a clean up. Worth a visit and will pop around again when back in town. See more..

    Noetzie Beach image
Just to the East of Knysna, at the end of a dirt road, lies Noetzie, a secluded beach which is proudly encircled by castles. It is one of the last remaining homes for the very rare African Black Oystercatcher and is therefore a conservancy. See more..

Matroosberg Reserve, is a Private Nature Reserve 35km outside of Ceres, well known for it's snow during winter and beautiful summer days and crystal pools during summer. Matroosberg Peak is also the highest mountain in the Boland region and because the owners of Matroosberg value Family Life and Adventure, we refer to Matroosberg as Peak of Life or Peak of Adventure. We offer a wide range of activities, have one of the top 10 4x4 trails in SA. But even though we are a big establishment, you will still receive personal attention from the family who owns it, for they really go the extra mile to make your stay as comfortable as possible. This is one of the only self catering establishments, where you can have the services of a butler...how cool is that... Matroosberg offers Hotel service, for guests with an self-catering budget! See more..

    - Valley Views

    Grootvadersbosch Nature Reserve image
There are a few hiking options & we decided to do the 10km hike , 1 other is slightly longer @14km. We visited on 4 Feb & obtaining the necessary permit was quick & easy as we Wildcard holders so no cost . The trail is fairly flat except when you go down to the river & then up & down to the waterfall which unfortunately not flowing currently as its not rainy season yet. That part was fairly tough but the views all along were amazing. There are a few bird hides along the way which have great viewing decks , along with a few vervet monkeys . A fair part , I'd say about 70% is in the shade which helped as it was around 30 degrees celcius It's easy to find the Reserve from the Main Rd out of Heidelberg , all gravel roads but in pretty good condition for any vehicle See more..

Ashia is a Fair Trade Tourism accredited, world-class cheetah sanctuary and awareness centre outside Paarl in South Africa’s Western Cape, a mere 45 minute drive from Cape Town. An African name meaning ‘life and hope’, Ashia lies nestled at the foot of the dramatic Drakenstein mountains, providing the perfect setting for the sanctuary’s conservation, education and research programs. Founded to help prevent the further decline of the cheetah population, the sanctuary’s primary conservation initiatives entail the release of captive-born and raised cheetah into the protected wild of game reserves. This is financed and managed by our conservation arm, Ashia Cheetah Conservation (ACC), a registered non-profit company. Please note that Ashia has a strict no-touch policy and no children under 16 years are allowed around any animal areas. See more..

    22 Waterfalls image
If you are outdoorsy and like nature than 22 waterfalls is your destination in porterville. Beautiful place with a stunning view at certain points. The only reason I’m not giving a 4 star review is due to the unsafe nature of this hike. 22 Waterfalls is more a rock climbing experience than a hike. You’ll find yourself at very high points climbing slippery rocks with a chance of falling down the mountain. No railings going up any of the extreme points during this climb, but that’s probably why you need to sign a waiver before you start. This climb is not for children or beginners, but if you stay at the bottom you will find a pool or 2 that the children can swim in. See more..

    - A special experience

    Ramskop Nature Reserve image
While many of the usual spring flowers were already over when i visisted (there were plenty of these elsewhere in the region), i spent 2 hours wandering through little paths up and down the hill and discovered plenty of flowers, pretty and different, that i had not seen elsewhere. There were dozens of birds, with plenty to say, a myriad small creatures going about their business and fascinating foliage to observe. The views of the Cedarberg mountains and the dam were beautiful. My only comment would be that there was a bit of litter deep in the bushes which should be removed. See more..
