  2. 4.5 Boschendal (1.547 reviews)
    - Wish we could stay a lifetime.
Tuesday: 9:00 AM - 9:00 PM Spent More than 3 hours Historic Sites • Wineries & Vineyards • Farms
    Boschendal image
If you have the opportunity to stay at Boschendal, do. Our family fell in love with this place. We rented a 3bd orchard cottage for 3-nights. I wish we could have stayed for a week, or perhaps a lifetime. We're used to US prices, and a similar property in Napa would be, I expect, 5x or 10x the price. Even if the prices were the same, I'd much rather go back to Boschendal. The grounds and gardens were stunning. Our cottage was delightful. The breakfasts were a highlight of our stay. We enjoyed relaxing around our (indoor and outdoor) fireplaces during the day it rained and enjoyed the gardens, mountain biking and even a chilly swim on our day of sun. My only regret is that we didn't stay longer, and that Boschendal is so far away. See more..

  4. 4.5 Fairview Wine and Cheese (1.111 reviews)
    - Great FAMILY tastings!
    Tuesday: 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM Spent 1-2 hours Wineries & Vineyards
    Fairview Wine and Cheese image
This was a great wine tasting experience for our family…Yep you heard it right - our family! We have two kids under age of 8, didn’t know how we were going to accomplish this day of tastings. As soon as we got in the property, someone greeted us as they were going from the wine room to the restaurant and told us about the “kids tasting”. It was a lifesaver. Gave our two boys something to laugh and talk about, while given us a moment to be guided through the great selection they have. Curt - our wine guide/barista/storyteller was great! He kept us entertained and shared spot on nuances between the different tasting pours and the cheese/meat. Being from the US, I don’t see the appeal to the family experience in most tours so they have set a new bar for me. Great job hosting team and Curt! Thank you for being awesome. See more..

Over the years the property was divided and the portion which is now Rickety Bridge was granted to Paulina De Villiers, one of the first female land owners in South Africa, in 1797. In the late 1980's the estate became known as Rickety Bridge due to the old railway sleeper bridge which crossed the Franschhoek River and provided the entry point to the estate. The rickety bridge was replaced in 1996 and the new bridge provides a safe crossing over the river. Today, Rickety Bridge is a stately Franschhoek winery which has gone from strength to strength in recent years and the memory and pioneering spirit of Paulina De Villiers is celebrated by the flagship range of wines, Paulina's Reserve. These distinctive wines, as well as the renowned Rickety Bridge classic range and the Foundation Stone Range, have received many accolades and high praise in recent years. See more..

  41. 4.5 Stark-Condé Wines (220 reviews)
    - Beautiful Setting
Spent 1-2 hours Wineries & Vineyards
    Stark-Condé Wines image
This boutique winery is picturesquely nestled in the Jonkershoek Valley, just 3 kilometres outside town in Stellenbosch. The setting is simply overwhelmingly beautiful - hence, the name of the Postcard Cafe. What was intended to attract more feet to the tasting room; a little cafe linked to the winery, has now become the winery linked to the Cafe instead. The winery is intensively family-run; German father, Japanese-German daughter and Cuban-American husband co-own the winery with their two daughters working weekends to help in the fully booked cafe. Winemaker and co-owner, Jose Conde hand-crafted his first-ever Cabernet Sauvignon vintage in a store room of the winery at the time in 1998. The four barrels aged gracefully and received five stars by John Platter -evidently Jose had been destined to be a winemaker and not a graphic designer. Adding to the talent, the farm's higher elevations and finely textured soils (perfect for Cabernet Sauvignon), made it a painless career change. 2013 celebrated Jose's fifteenth vintage with Old Mutual (South Africa) and won Stark-Conde the acclaimed trophy for Most Successful Producer in South Africa, Trophy for Best Cabernet Sauvignon and Trophy for Best Shiraz. Steep alterations in vineyard elevation make for a range of sites with distinct characteristics. Combined with the tremendous winter rainfall in Jonkershoek, (3 times more rain than Stellenbosch) these qualities ensure a more than suitable terrain for growing Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Petit Syrah and Pinotage. Jose firmly believes in traditional winemaking - hand-picking, careful hand selection of the grapes, manual punch-downs, open-tank fermentation, basket pressing, and patient maturation for 22 months in French oak barrels. With only 6000 cases produced annually, wines are not sold commercially and the proverbial 'word of mouth' is solely relied upon for advertising. Not that the scenery should not be enough of a reas... See more..
