Temporarily closed - Topped by a purple-and-burgundy-striped conversation piece of a skyscraper at the north pole of Faria Lima, the cultural center named after a renowned Japanese-Brazilian artist (whose son designed the building) features a rotating schedule of visual art exhibitions, including award-winning photography, avant-garde sculptures, and even decorative cachaça bottle labels. The Pinacoteca (Museum) Diógenes Duarte Paes is located in an historic building up on the hill, near the center of town. It's maybe a 45-minute walk from the CPTM train station. Apparently the norm is to have a guided visit (which didn't cost anything); fortunately, I speak Portuguese. Of particular interest was a room devoted to the drawings of a 1940s-era caricaturist who portrayed, sometimes unflatteringly, people going about their day-to-day business. A couple of the drawings showed obese Afro-Brazilian women with stereotypically huge lips. I asked my guide (also Afro-Brazilian) if this wasn't considered racially offensive under current standards. She replied yes, very much so, and said that the displays were controversial. I'm glad that the cultural revolution that is afflicting the United States hasn't made its way to the Jundiaí Pinacoteca yet. I'd rather see offensive drawings that reflect the culture of a bygone era, or even of a lone misanthrope from that era, than have them hidden away because they're offensive by modern standards. We, after all, had Raymond Chandler, who in "The Big Sleep" wrote one sentence that's memorably homophobic but probably didn't raise an eyebrow back then. See more..

Uma galeria de esquina, quase passa despercebida no ritmo corriqueiro do centro da cidade, se não fosse claro, a bela e simpática arquitetura. Logo ao entrar me senti agraciada pelo o frescor do piso frio e antigo da galeria, comparado ao calor que fazia do lado de fora. Fui em uma época que havia uma Exposição promovida pelo EMCA, onde haviam reproduções feitas por alunos mirins do curso de pintura. Foi muito encantador me deparar com obras impressionistas de Monet, Manet e outras de Van Gogh recriadas por talentosos aprendizes ainda tão jovens, como era possível ver pela idade na identificação. Para mim isso foi um grande sinal de que a cidade de Garça aspira cultura e arte, que existe um grande incentivo de se repassar o ensino sobre as belas artes, sobre os grandes mestres da pintura e de movimentos artísticos como foi nesse caso. O ambiente contava com monitores bem prestativos, o lugar embora não fosse tão amplo, tinha o espaço ideal para se apreciar uma boa arte e sair de lá revigorado com isso.
