Monastery and old art museum

The Dragomirna Monastery's history started back in 1602 AD when the small church was built and dedicated to St. Enoch, Elijah and John the Teologue. The monastery built during the first three decades of the 17th century, between 1843 -1846 was a general reconstruction. The total height up to the Cross is 42 m. “It is tall and narrow like a fine casket with holy relics; an architectural jewel with around the ancient woods of Bucovina,” wrote great Romanian historian Nicolae Iorga.

...of medieval church building in Moldavia.
First things first - location is wrongly set - the monastery is not in Suceava!! it is located in the village of Dragomirna - 15 km away Suceava ...so if you are in Suceava and you set up your navigation don't worry its ok! you are supposed to drive out of the city to get to Dragomirna! Don't look for it in Suceava is not in the city!! Parking on the premises in a decent size parking lot - so you don't have to leave your car on the road somewhere. As you walk up the short alley you enter into the courtyard where you pay your entrance ticket and fee for taking pictures. The church is the tallest in Bucovina with its 42 or 46 meters height (why the puzzle, on the premises we were told 46 m of height , everywhere you look it up you'll find 42 ,) - bottom line is - the church ahs the tallest tower in whole Bucovina. The church is built of stone with the tower being carved with a lot of details ... the style of architecture has some gothic elements to it - so it is very interesting from all perspectives. No outside paintings - in the end not all the churches of Bucovina have that. The outside walls of the compound are very thick - mementoes of the medieval times when the Turks and Tartars where coming periodically to plunder the area ... so the fortification made the monastery a small bastion and offered some protection against the raiders - sure it wouldn't stop a decent size army or it would not resist a siege, but against the average raiders it was exactly what was needed. So when you are in the area ,, go to Dragomirna! check out the monastery it is definitely worth it.

    A magical place
When we arrived at the monastery I could not believe my eyes , I felt like I left the real world and entered a fairy tale . Dragomirna is not as famous as the other monasteries in Bucovina but for me is the most beautiful . I don't have words to describe it but you can see for yourself pictures on the website http://www.dragomirna.ro/home.html
