The Virgin of the Boat
This Roman Catholic Church was founded in the 17th century but has a long religious history before that. The church was rebuilt in 2015 after a devastating 2013 fire. It is dedicated to the Virgin of the Boat and reflects a nautical décor that is delightfully refreshing. The location is spectacular, directly on the coast facing the sea and near the lighthouse. Legend says this is the place where the Virgin Mary arrived in a stone boat to encourage Saint James in his evangelization efforts. Nearby are ‘magical’ stones with healing properties, said to be the remnants of the Virgin’s boat. Muxía is also one of the final destinations for pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago, the Way of Saint James. Marker zero is located near the A Ferida monument. I visited with Tour Galicia.

Rough sea
We visited the place with an excursion from A Coruña to Costa da Morte. It is an obligatory stop. The sanctuary seems to always be closed though and you can see the church from inside through the grids of the door. However there are nice viewing points there. Some people were going to the rocks but this seemed too dangerous for us considering the winds even though it was summer and a very sunny day. We went a little bit up towards the left facing the sea and there you have nice viewing point and sculpture. The sanctuary protects the fishermen in this very rough sea area.

Unexpectedly beautiful!
We stumbled across walking up to the view point in Muxia. So glad we walked across to see it close up. It's a beautifully peaceful place and unusual setting for a church. The stone work is beautiful and vista looking out to sea is beautiful. Not sure how busy it would normally get but it was not crowded at all when we visited.
